So I went to a wedding...

My older sister was married yesterday and I am now super pumped to get married. Thanks to you knotties I was looking at everything trying not to be critical because everything I've learned. I noticed a couple f things I learned from TK, however it was so pretty! I really loved her theme which was basically bringing the beach to us ( we only have gross looking man made beaches here in Michigan). I was nervous because I've seen some pretty tacky beach themed weddings thanks to pinterest. However her color palette was pretty, the sea shells were real and so on and so forth. I was just really out done because she had to replan her whole wedding in under a week because of issues with her venue. Literally, she had to find a new caterer, bakery, the works. I was upset for her but she pulled it off beautifully.

My only issue with her whole wedding was her MIL came in a.. how do I put this.. tacky sun dress. That's putting it nicely. Oh and I forgot she did NOT comb her hair and had on flip flops. Everyone looks BEAUTIFUL and then there was her... I was embarrassed for her. Now I know that it was not my wedding and I nor my sister can control what people wore, but shouldn't you have at least combed your hair for your son's wedding? I don't think I will have a required dress code, however I will expect my mom to comb her hair.

I wasn't the only one who said something.. everyone seated around me said something about it. I guess the point of this post is would you have been upset?

I also want to know if anyone has had issues with vendors cancelling last minute? I asked because I've heard from two people today who had to replan their wedding in less than 30 days because their venues cancelled

Re: So I went to a wedding...

  • I'm pleased that you enjoyed yourself, and that your sister managed to get everything pulled together so quickly.  I can't imagine that was a pleasant week for them at all.

It's hard to know whether I would have said anything to said lady's face.  Is that failed image box a picture of her?  I surely would have been side eyeing her and talking behind her back, which I know is worse, but everyone I know would be doing it.  Knowing my family and group of friends, I would have been the one elected to approach her and offer the use of my hair comb.  I guess it comes with being slightly autistic.  Apparently I get to do all the mean stuff no one else wants to do, and then follow with, "Oh sorry, was that offensive?  You know my social skills are a little off.  I'll make a point not do that again."  That

While I would have noticed if my FMIL looked like she just rolled out of bed at our wedding, I wouldn't let it bother me. There are so many crazy things that happen in life and I'm just not willing to expend energy on something that is so inconsequential.

As for vendors, yes. It happens. Businesses go under all the time, venues go bankrupt, hurricanes hit, etc. Good for your sister that she stayed calm and put plan B into effect without letting it ruin the happy occasion.

    1) Everyone totally was, down to the bridal party. It was not a pretty sight,

    2) I had one in my purse I wanted to take her to the bathroom and fix her and trade shoes with her or something. It was a complete disaster.

That failed image box is not supposed to be there I thought I took it off, If one gets posted to facebook I promise to share and tag you!

I don't know what beaches you've been to in Michigan, but there are plenty of beautiful ones!!!
  • So you're saying all of the beaches of the Great Lakes are man-made?

That is quite possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard anybody claim.
  • I definitely wouldn't have said anything to her and I would think anyone who would is an asshole. What do you say, "Um your hair looks like shit. Please use my comb."? Is this how the MIL always looks? Let her be. At my brother's wedding, the MOB wore a casual top with pants and no makeup and didn't do much (if anything) to her hair. That's how she usually looks and that's how she's comfortable.

  • @jakeia0112 Still getting a failed picture here. I'm just wondering whether it's really as bad as you think, or you're just being overly thoughtful about this as you have your own wedding coming up, and I suppose you have to invite your sister's new in-laws. As to anyone saying something being a jackass, I always felt like it was kinder to say something than to let someone be talked about behind their back all night. Obviously you can't do much about the dress and the shoes, but the hair comb is a simple thing. That said, PPs are right. If that's how she always looks, you kind of have to run with it. Not all people get dressed up for special events.

I didn't wanna say it but you guys are making me say it.. There are no pretty beaches near Detroit... I was trying not to throw my city under the bus. I know there are pretty beaches elsewhere just not where I'm from.

Actually it's not. While there are beautiful beaches elsewhere there are none in our area and all the ones around us are man made. So the statement I made was true for my area.

The statement you made, and you've been quoted numerous times so backpedaling makes you look even more ridiculous which I didn't think was possible, was "we only have gross looking man made beaches here in Michigan." That statement you made about beaches here in Michigan is most definitely not true. And it definitely is still a monumentally stupid thing to say.

Your opinion. You're entitled to it. Maybe I should have been clear and said in my area. Better? K.

Yes, that would have been better. We're not mind-readers, Einstein. We can only go by what you write. You say "we only have gross looking man made beaches here in Michigan" and you honestly expected that Internet strangers on an international message board who don't know you are going to automatically think "Well, clearly she's talking only about the beaches in Wayne County, not every beach in Michigan like she said in her original statement. Because after all, even though nobody here knows her, it's obvious that she hails from the Metro Detroit area."

    The ridiculosity never stops.
  • My brother got married on a beautiful "real" beach in the UP, they do exist pretty much all over MI, since its actually SURROUNDED by water, lol.  I'm from the Detroit area you can drive an hourish away and see some nice beaches from there too.
