Tahiti/Bora Bora

Has anyone been on a cruise to the French Poynesia? If so tell me about your experience please. We're thinking of going there for our honeymoon. Tia

Re: Tahiti/Bora Bora

  • I have been to the islands six times, but never on a cruise. The Paul Gauguin is one of the best cruiselines/ships out there! Expensive, but so worth it :)

  • @Jells2dot0‌ would love to stay in those huts over the water too. Can't decide lol. What are some good resorts there in your opinion?

  • It really depends on many factors- which islands you want to see, what your budget is, what type of experience you want from the resort. I've stayed at most of them over the years across 7 islands in the Societies and Tuamotus. Each resort has it's own unique characteristics that set it apart, so it boils down to what best suits your wants and needs. I personally prefer quieter, smaller islands/resorts, so I favor Le Taha'a in Taha'a and islands like tikehau and rangiroa. I am itching to get to the new Brando resort as well. FWIW, though, most first timers check out Moorea and Bora Bora. It's a good balance of activity, beauty, pricing, and having ample resort choices.

Check out tahititourism.com and you can also search for a certified Tahiti Specialist on there who can match you up to the perfect island/resort combo (or cruise!)

  • Thanks so much! @Jells2dot0‌ I will check it out. I want romantic, quiet but be able to go shopping or sightsee

  • There isn't too much shopping on any of the islands. The most you'll find is Le Marche in Papeete. It's an open market that has a ton of random stuff. You can get around Moorea via car in about three hours with stops and Bora Bora even less. So, you should not have an issue with quiet :)

  • We went on the Paul Gauguin for our May 2012 honeymoon. It was amazing. We did the cook & society island itinerary, and loved every second of it. The PG does a great job of bringing FP onto the ship, and it makes for a very special experience. Feel free to PM me if you have questions!

  • We are doing exactly this! In October. With Paul Gauguin! And I am a research-a-holic lol. It should be absolutlely amazing!
  • Oh and we are staying in Moorea for the first few nights in an overwater bungalow. Picked Moorea because we love everything we have read about it, and it is so close to Tahiti so we can just take the ferry back to Tahiti on the day of the cruise and the cruise port is really close by to the ferry terminal.

If you don't mind me asking, what does that cruise cost?
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Depending on when and where you go, the cruise will be anywhere from $3500-$7000 per person plus some excursions. The Society islands only cruises run between $3500-$4500. Once you add in places like the Cooks, Tonga, Fiji, or the Marquesas, the cost goes up.

  • @Jells2dot0‌ likes for that info. It would just be society island cruise. I've been on a bunch of cruises but not this one. Is the cruise better than staying on different islans?

  • If you really felt strongly about seeing more than 1-2 islands, then this is by far the best way to do it. A typical week in Tahiti by land will run you at least $8k for two plus spending money for food and activities. $8k is on the low end too. I'd say more like $10k+ if you want a 5 star OWB in Bora Bora. So, right off the bat, a 7 night Society Island cruise is around that $8k mark and includes your meals. It's a good value and you get to see how unique each island is.
