Favorite memories of Robin Williams?

Today is such a sad day for me. I always thought it would be sad when Robin Williams died...but I never realized just how sad I would actually feel. I woke up at 3:00 last night and couldn't fall back to sleep so I spent the next hour just scrolling through tweets and photos.

What are some of your favorite memories growing up of Robin Williams?

For me...my sisters and I used to jump around on the trampoline a lot as kids. Sometimes we'd jump forward, stretch out and screech "Pocahontas!" like Genie in one of the Aladdin movies and then we'd all just die giggling over it.

My other favorite was Robin Williams' impersonation of his cat from his Live on Broadway show. My sister @southernpeach89 and I pretty much pee our pants laughing every time we watch it.

Re: Favorite memories of Robin Williams?

  • Aw. They play Mrs. Doubtfire on TV a lot and it nearly always sucks me in. Boo divorce.

Also JUMANJI! Omgosh that movie got into my head.

I remember always watching Mrs. Doubtfire every time we would go to our grandmother's house and I would never get sick of watching Robin Williams in that movie. I also loved him in Hook, Aladdin, Patch Adams, Dead Poets Society, and basically everything he has ever stared in. He was such a great actor and apparently a great person outside of acting. It's so sad to hear he was suffering so much inside. Breaks my heart.
  • I was so sad to hear the news. I can't pick my favorite memory, but this quote really hit home in light of the situation...

Also, I loved the following movies he had a role in:

    Dead Poets Society
    Jumanji
    Hook (Obviously. Who didn't?)
    Aladdin

  • Mrs doubtfire! So iconic. One of my bridesmaids wasn't allowed to watch it when she was little (she was sheltered lol) and I always say she missed out on life. That movie was epic.

I also loved jumanji and Aladdin. Because why wouldn't you!?

One of my old coworkers also has bipolar disorder and is real shook up about his death. I'm hoping this will bring to light some of the real struggles bipolar disorder is facing in acceptance, diagnosis, and treatment. It's a huge issue that really needs more research before we wrap our heads around it.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poet's Society and Aladdin. My sister and I loved the Genie, I was shocked to hear that he died.

  • I watched What Dreams May Come for the first time in college after reading the book. The whole story is really hitting me right now. I think that's probably one of my top Robin Williams movies as an adult. Some of my other favortes: Hook Aladdin Dead Poets Society Good Will Hunting Patch Adams

  • I think Aladdin was the first movie I "saw" him in. Like I remember seeing him in things after that movie and thinking "That's the Genie's voice!" The Genie was SO funny to me.
  • The invention of golf from "Live on Broadway."
  • I thought H was making a bad joke when he told me last night...I hadn't heard.

I will always think of him as Peter Pan in the movie Hook. H and I also love his stand-up comedy. Patch Adams, Good Will Hunting, Old Dogs, Mrs. Doubtfire, Dead Poet Society, Aladdin, August Rush, The Birdcadge, Furngully...

I also think about him in those St. Jude commercials.

    I can't believe he's gone.

I also love his stand-up. The "Who loves Kitty?!" kills me every time. I was very saddened to hear of his death and his is hitting me harder than any celebrity death to date.

  • I am so sad. This is the first celebrity death that has really affected me - I've been sad over others passing away, but I actually cried last night when I heard.

I don't think I can pick a favorite movie of his. He was so amazing in so many different roles - to think the same guy was the Genie in Aladdin, and the doctor in Patch Adams, and Mrs. Doubtfire, and One Hour Photo... He was truly one of a kind.

One of my favorites that gets forgotten often is Jack. Him sliding down the stairs in that box makes me laugh and breaks my heart all at the same time.

A very poignant quote from that movie: "Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you're ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day... make a wish and think of me. Make your life spectacular. I know I did."

  • H and I were talking about this last night. So sad. Good Will Hunting was one of my favorite roles of his. He seemed so gritty, raw and real in that movie.
  • His role as Peter Pan was inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. I actually just got all excited a couple of days ago that they added that movie on Hulu. Just waiting for the perfect night to watch it now.

His voice created some pretty epic cartoon characters: Aladdin's Genie, the crazy robot from Robots (can't remember his name), and the perverted penguin, Lovelace.

He will always be Oh Captain, My Captain. His dance routine from The Birdcage was hilarious.

Favorite quote: "How do you make a hanky dance? Put a little boogie in it."

I forgot about that movie!! I love when he teaches the dances "Martha Graham, Martha Graham..Fosse, Fosse.."

  • All of his movies, especially Aladdin and Good Will Hunting those are my top favorites

    Anniversary

  • I loved him in his TV show Mork and Mindy. I loved him in Death to Smoochy. I was impressed that he could play a creepy psycho in Insomniac. He always reminded me of my Uncle Pat as far as how he looked. When I see him I see my uncle.

    SO creepy.

And omgosh I need to watch Death to Smoochy rightthissecond!
  • I really loved him in Fern Gully, which was my favorite movie as a little kid (and still kind of is) and Mrs. Doubtfire. It was the only "family friendly" movie that my grandma had at her house so we watched it all.the.time. Does anyone remember the episode of SVU he guest starred in? He played a total creepster, and part of his crime involved impersonating other people, which suited him so well it was scary.

I did! Totally forgot about that one. He definitely was a versatile actor!
  • I also just remembered that I saw Mrs. Doubt fire on my very first date in high school!
  • I'm so late to this conversation but this thread made me so sad. I can't even pick a favorite but I was telling my mom yesterday that basically all of my favorite childhood movies were Robin Williams' movies. @goldenpenguin Jack was one of my favorites!! Mrs. Doubtfire "HELLOOO" I hated Miranda so much for breaking his heart, THEY'RE HIS GOD DAMNED KIDS TOO! Hook is a classic, and of course Jumanji. agh.

My H hates Sally Field because she played Miranda. It makes me sad because she's one of my favorites!

  • I have no hate for Sally field in life, but definitely in that movie. Oddly, I hate pierce brosman because of that movie :)
