Anyone been a pregnant bridesmaid?

My best friend's wedding is coming up in September, at which point I will be about 7 months pregnant.  When we ordered dresses, I was still newly pregnant and not showing at all and considering this is my first baby and I had absolutely no idea how I would grow, I went with the salon's advice on sizing.  At the time I was measuring an 8, she ordered me an 18 with extra length (I'm tall so I was okay with it).  However, now we are about a month out from the wedding and the dress is still way too big and will need some major alterations, but I still don't know how much I will grow in the next month.  If you've been a pregnant bridesmaid (or just pregnant in general I guess), when would you suggest I pull the plug and get the alterations done?  The salon where we bought them only does bridal alterations so I need to find a different place, but I'm not worried about that.

Re: Anyone been a pregnant bridesmaid?

  • My MOH was 6 months pregnant for my wedding.  She was trying when we purchased the dresses, so she completely guessed on the size and added extra length too.  First, I would call your alterations place and tell them the "problem".  See how late they can accomodate you before the wedding.  We had knee length dresses.  My friend got the mid section altered first and the seamstress started to pin the hem in the back and sides.  My friend went back the week of the wedding and had the front of the hem leveled out.  She picked the dress up the day before the wedding.  It was perfect.  The seamstress we use is very quick, so this worked out perfectly for us.

Keep in mind that if the dress you have purchased has any boning in it, it will probably all need to be removed.  So that will take longer to alter since the seamstress will need to really rip apart the dress.  We had empire waist dresses, so not boning to consider.  This same friend was pregnant with her first child for another wedding we were in.  That bride made the friend get measured while she was 8 months pregnant!  There was more than enough time to wait to order, but the bride insisted.  So the dress was crazy huge on my friend and she needed to have the whole dress restructured and get the boning removed.  It cost her just as much in alterations as it did to purchase the dress.  This wedding taught me to say no as a BM and also to not be friends with that bride anymore!  My friend also goes to my, cheaper, seamstress too!

  • I would take it to a reputable local seamstress (ask around or check yelp for recommendations) within a month of the wedding.

    Congrats!!

This is another reason I stick by my U/O of choosing your bridal parties dresses is stupid. I wish you could pick something off the rack closer to the wedding, OP! Agree with the PPs. Find a place to have the alterations done at and ask them how close to the date you can begin because you aren't sure what size you will be.
  • Thank you guys for the advice!  Luckily the dress is long and mostly flowy so I'm hoping it will be more forgiving in the middle.  Honestly, it is my boobs that won't stop growing!  Since the dress is strapless I'm worried about that part fitting correctly.  I'll start calling places to see what they recommend.
  • If there is a lot of extra lentgh at the bottom, perhaps your seamstress can create a halter strap for you.  I have done this on a few strapless BM dresses as I hate strapless dresses.  That should provide you a bit more coverage up top.
  • My FSIL is in a wedding in a few weeks and will be about 4 months pregnant...which obviously wasn't the case when she purchased her dress!

The bust is the issue for her as well. She met with a seamstress, who told her to bring the dress back about 2 weeks before the wedding, and I think the plan is to take out the seams as far as possible, and add extra material in the side seams (under the arms) if necessary. It shouldn't be too visible, and shouldn't take too long to do. This might be an option for you, or converting it to a halter might work well if you're worried about it staying up.

  • thank you for the suggestions!  I'm not too worried about the coverage because we did order it so big that it does cover, but I am worried about being comfortable in a strapless dress with this new...chest.  It came with spaghetti straps that my friend is totally cool with me using if need be so that's helpful.
