Darn Postal Service!

I mailed out our invites on July 10th and what do I pick up from our mailbox on Friday? One of our invites has been returned, with a week until the response date and 3 weeks til our wedding! The invite was sent to Texas (from Virginia) but I'm shocked that it took five weeks to get back to us. And now we're not really sure what to do.

It's at least partially our fault as well; we saw these folks (FI's second cousin, his wife and daughter) at another family wedding in April and they mentioned that they would be moving this summer. When we saw FI's great aunt in late June we asked if they had moved yet and she said no but we should have followed up with them before we sent out invites (2 weeks later). I immediately sent a Facebook message to the wife when I checked the mail on Friday (we don't have their phone numbers or emails). I apologized for the mix up and asked for their new address so we could re-send the invite. She saw the message but hasn't responded. *Sigh*

FI texted his grandma this morning to get one of their phone numbers but I feel bad about this. At this point there's probably no way they can attend our wedding, what with putting in vacation time at work, booking flights and a hotel. And weddings in his family are basically family reunions so I feel like they would have attended if they got the invitation in a timely manner. Is there anything else we should do/say? Second cousin's wife has a bit of a reputation for being touchy and I'd hate for them to think that we uninvited them.

Re: Darn Postal Service!

  • The wife saw the message, so she now knows about the wedding.  The couple should have put a mail forward at the post office when they moved to their new address.  I would let your FI call his cousin, if he gets the phone number from Great Aunt.  But there isn't much else you can do, you did reach out to them ASAP.

We JUST got an invite back that we mailed out in MAY for our JULY wedding.

It was for DH's hairdresser. She threw a pretty big fit about not getting an invite, we were accused of not sending it, we personally delivered a fresh one to her.. And DH even got his hair cut with her the morning of the wedding. And she didn't show. - I know, a tangent, but we are still really hurt by it!

So we were surprised to get the invite back 3 months later. Where the hell did it go for that amount of time?! It was local!

  • @Sugargirl1019‌ 3 months! And I thought 5 weeks was bad! Reminds me of National Lampoon's Christmas vacation, where Clark's bonus got stuck between the seats of the delivery van.
  • Haha yea. It was AlMOST as much of a shit show as that :)

  • We received a gift about a month before our wedding from H's aunt and uncle.  We immediately sent a thank you card.  At the wedding we got another card from them with a note asking us to let them know if we'd received the gift, which was odd since we'd sent the thank you weeks before.  About another month later we go the thank you card returned to us.  The aunt and uncle had moved and the card 'failed to be forwarded'.  We got their new address and re-sent it, but I still feel a little bad that they probably think we took 2 months to write a simple thank you card!
  • Yeah, it's one of those scenarios where I feel like I can't win. I know I sent it and got it returned, but I know it could also sound like an excused to cover our forgetfulness/rudeness to second cousin and fam. I'm half-tempted to send them a photo of the envelope to prove that it actually happened.
  • We sent out STDs in March. Wedding invitations went out not long ago. We just got an invitation returned to us. The STD never came back.

I guess they moved ago and didn't mention it to my parents (they have a lot of properties and my parents never visit them in their main city). Their new invitation is in the mail.

No... Just a hairdresser the family has been seeing for 5 years... I was not very nice when I first heard they wanted to invite their hairdresser. Then she finally RSVPd with a best friend plus one, and I was pretty mad. Then she didn't show up? I'm threatening DH to never go back and see her I'm so livid.

After all that I'd be very upset. You hound me for an invite and then don't deign to show up? There goes my business!
  • Ugh the postal service is doing this to me right now as well.
I have had returns... Missing invites... or ones that came back too heavy yet the others were fine?

    Drives me NUTS.

Most of the missing ones are indeed local.

  • reading this, is it etiquette appropriate to let your guests know that their invites have been mailed?

I think if you just told your guest (no public facebook post) that it would be fine.

  • Personally I did tell people... as I hadn't heard anything about them receiving them in over 2 weeks, so I'm glad I did ask or I'd have no idea they didn't get them.

I also didn't want them to think they were B list guests, weren't invited or something rude like that if anyone in passing mentioned that they had received one.

    Nothing public.

  • My neighbor still hasn't gotten her invite from my baby shower in January. It wasn't returned either. The PO sucks.

  • @pinkshorts27‌ yeah, it would all be over the phone (for OOT), or in person (local), I only FB for school
  • I had a thank you note returned to me, but it was my best friend. And I had the address correct. She had just moved and I guess didn't put her name on the mailbox so they didn't deliver it. So stupid.

I just texted her and said, hey your thank you note got returned to me. Is this your address.

We moved a week after our wedding, but we set up the forwarding a few weeks prior. Well apparently they held some of our mail (not all of it) and a birthday card for my husband (then FI) got returned to the sender. Something I ordered for the wedding didn't come in time (not big deal) so I contacted the shipper and they sent a new one. Then I got the missing item the next day.

It's like what the hell! Yeah the PO is terrible.
