How the heck do you do THAT? (decor question)

HAHA!   Hi everyone!  I haven't yet decided if I want to hire a day of planner or not.  Our caterer has an attendant that would provide a lot of the services that a day of planner would, except the one that scares me the most.  Decorating the venue.  Our venue only allows decorations and draping to be hung by fishing line......  We are not able to set up the night before as there is a wedding that night.  How do I figure out how I want the room draped, (if at all) and lit?  How would I know how much fabric to buy? And who is supposed to put it all up if I don't hire someone?  Me and my girls?  My fiancé and his guys? My parents? His sisters?  I know it seems logical to hire someone and that is not out of the question but if I DONT, who normally does this stuff?  Sorry for so many questions.  LOL.  TIA

    Check with your venue first to see if hiring someone or enlisting help from friends and family is an option.  For my cousin's wedding they had to hire someone to climb a ladder and hang her tissue flowers from the ceiling.  It was in the venue contract so even though my uncle was happy to climb up there and tack them up, the venue didn't allow it for insurance reasons.

    Assuming it is an option for you to DIY this, check with the venue for room dimensions and that should help you get a rough idea of how much fabric you'd need. Websites will help you. http://www.fabricdraper.com/Measure.html  You can also google search for images of receptions at your venue to see if anyone's draped fabric/ added lighting to help you decide whether you want to or not. 

    Depending on the time of your wedding and what time the venue would let you in to decorate, you might be able to enlist members of your wedding party or friends/ family to help with this.  Please be honest with them that you are asking for their help and don't put it to them like it's their duty or like it's an honor.  If you're not able to get into the venue early enough to do this and have plenty of time to be getting ready then I strongly suggest looking to hire someone.  The venue must have someone who's done this there before or that they could recommend.

    This. I rarely, if ever, think draping adds enough to the look of a place to be worth it.

    Thank you for the response! All very good suggestions! :) Lolo883, I agree with your statement. Our venue is quite beautiful without draping but its a 'tad' too plain to do "nothing". Im hoping to catch a glimpse of someone else's set up (of course not crashing their wedding lol)

    I would definitely suggest a day of planner! It is less expensive than a full wedding planner but so worth it! Having a planner who works for your caterer or venue is great, but their first and foremost concern is taking care of the catering or venue. A day of planner takes care of decorating and so much more! There are always last minute things that come up on the day of, and having someone there (besides bridal party and family) is invaluable.

    If you go the DOC route, make sure the person understands they will be decorating.  Mine was more logistics, making sure things were in place, greeting vendors as they arrived, making sure everyone was ready to do the things they had to do on time--bars ready?  Priest in place?  Appetizers ready to be passed?  Caterer ringing bell to start seating?  That kind of thing.  No way she was going to be on a ladder decorating.
