Cake Opinions

I'm having a Tiffany themed/color schemed wedding. I found these pictures online and fell in love. Perfect color, and the mini cakes look like Tiffany boxes. Seemed perfect to me.

I showed the pictures to someone this weekend, and was told it looks tacky and cheap. Now I'm second guessing it.

So, what do you think?

Re: Cake Opinions

  • I don't think they look "tacky" or "cheap" at all.

They might be more suitable for a groom's cake or another dessert as opposed to the main wedding cake, but that's entirely up to you.
  • I don't think they look tacky or cheap at all. To me it is just a variation to having cupcakes. If you like it then have at it. And for some reason when something is not someone's cup of tea, instead of saying that it isn't their style they tend to call it tacky. And are those two croquembouche on either side of that one cake? Yum!

This is something I learned from when FSIL was planning her wedding. She showed lots of people pictures, and talked to them about wedding plans. It ended up biting her on the ass, because in turn, those people made demands of her wedding and made her change a lot of stuff that would've been perfectly fine the way she wanted it.

The more you talk to people you know about wedding stuff, the more they'll think you're actually interested in their input, to the point where they will want you to change things to suit them. If you and your FI like the cakes, y'all are in the clear. As long as your wedding stuff is hosted properly, nobody should have shit to say about it, and if they do, it's their problem.

  • Not everyone's taste? Sure. But "cheap"/"tacky"? Definitely not. Actually, if I were assessing the cost, I'd think these were more expensive than normal cake/cupcakes because of the individual detail. My only feedback is on taste - fondant tastes like shit and these have a lot of fondant.

  • Thank you all!

@beethery - I need to keep reminding myself of that. Everyone keeps asking for details, but as soon as I give them I am met with negativity. The only thing I originally wanted that has lasted is my color scheme and this cake.

I don't think the Tiffany Blue colour is tacky at all. Although, I do question, that otherwise, how are you having a "Tiffany themed" wedding? Is there more to it than the colour?

I don't love either of those cake options, but it's not my wedding, and if you love them, then who cares? I do think you could take the idea that those cake companies were going for though, and make it better.

Personally, I would do a regular wedding cake, or if not, a regular cutting cake, with cupcakes, in Tiffany Blue. I think it would look even better if you did a Tiffany Blue cutting cake. (Not in the shape of a box, up on a pedestal by itself), and then had the Tiffany boxes, but on a smaller scale. Like cupcake sized, for everyone to take one, kinda thing, set around the cutting cake, on the table. I think that would less "Birthday Party."

Again, my opinion, and ultimately, your decision, regardless! Go with what you love, and don't worry about what everyone else thinks! :)

Not my taste, but I don't think it looks horrible or cheap (in fact, anyone who has ever priced individual fondant cakes will know just how cheap it's not).  However, I do agree with the notion that it seems a little weird to do the Tiffany boxes though - just because it's an expensive jewelry store that was featured in a novella and movie, doesn't make it less "retail", akin to having a Target bullseye cake.  I'll assume that your ring came from Tiffany's though and maybe you have some connection to the store of some significance?  If not, then why not just use the the Tiffany blue color, but in a different design?

Though, mostly I base this off of the notion that I love love love cake and cake is very important to my family...and fondant tastes horrible.  You're going to see 100 (or however many guests worth) of peeled off Tiffany blue fondant lying in a heap on the sides of everyone's plate and that much fondant work is going to be very expensive.  Surely there has to be a cheaper and far more delicious way to have Tiffany blue incorporated into your cake/cupcakes?

(ETA:  I will say, while the use of the color isn't tacky, I can see how some could interpret the Tiffany blue boxes that way - if you're having a budget wedding and aren't the sort of person who frequents the store, it kind of comes off as being fake and trying to be grandiose for the sake of appearances...and if you are having a lavish affair and a Tiffany ring, it comes off as braggadocios.  I think it's a very fine line to tread to actually make that work.)

I love Tiffany blue. But I don't really love Tiffany-themed things--I think that's been played out. It also looks kinda golddigger etc.-ish. Like "I want a ton of overpriced jewelry or expensive things to make me happy." I do own a few Tiffany pieces, and I love them, but they aren't the typical charm necklace that every college girl hopes to get as a gift. My FI asked me if I wanted a Tiffany ring before he proposed. We had a frank discussion that went something like "If you want it to say 'Tiffany' I'll get the little blue box...but for what I'm spending, I can get you a rock almost double the size if I go to the local jeweler that my buddy knows who will give me a discount." I went for the bigger rock.

Long story aside, if Tiffany theme makes you happy, go for it. If I was a guest, I'd be thinking it was like something off a rich girl's Super Sweet Sixteen party on MTV, but whatever. My opinion isn't the one that matters on your special day.

Agree-they'll be made with fondant and fondant tastes bad. I scrape it off wedding cakes because it's inedible. I also try not to eat things that are so blatantly food colored--not so sure all the dyes in things are good for us.

One parting word: when you're 40 and you look at those photos, and you've developed more unique tastes, such as jewelry by a local artisan you love or Mikimoto pearls, will you regret having a cake that's a giant advertisement? Something tasteful, elegant, and timeless could make for more lasting photos.

  • I find the materialism of a Tiffany's-themed wedding to be tacky, but I don't think the cakes look cheap.

  • I love Tiffany and I love the color. And those cupcakes look super pricey. But they do seem more appropriate for an engagement party (for a bride that has a Tiffany ring) or... a Tiffany office party?

But then, whatever. Do what you want. I had a friend, who has never said anything so bizarre or judgy the entire time I've known him, tell me not to have cupcakes (just normal cupcakes, not shaped like anything specific) at the wedding because they would seem out of place unless I was serving fast food for dinner and just going all out ironic. What??? People have weird ideas. Everyone will end up judging something at your wedding, so might as well just do what you want.

  • I judge the Tiffany branding, not the color.

  • Well, you guys have definitely put things into perspective. I guess Tiffany isn't any different than a Target theme haha. That's cool, I can drop the Tiffany references and just stick with the color. The only references I was going to have was the cake and the favors were going home in similar boxes (Tiffany blue with white bow).
  • Love the individual cake idea!! Seems elegant and special for guests.  I would also think this would be more expensive than cupcakes or a larger cake but hey if its in your budget, go for it.  I don't think that looking at the cake I would instantly think of Tiffany or anything materialistic.  But reading your explanation, I really don't care for the idea of a "Tiffany themed" wedding.  To me, explaining it as that is what seems tacky.  Maybe try to change your wording to "classic elegant and light/powder blue".  Maybe it won't rub people the wrong way as much.

  • Maybe you could keep the box as your top layer and then do a bunch of Tiffany-blue cupcakes? That would be a good compromise, and your baker could use regular frosting on the cupcakes instead of fondant, which would keep the price down.
  • I think that concept is really better than others I have seen! The individual boxes (I'm assuming they would be petit four-like) seem upscale and very detailed. A good twist on the individual cupcake trend (bleh).
  • I don't think they look tacky or cheap at all. To me it is just a variation to having cupcakes. If you like it then have at it. And for some reason when something is not someone's cup of tea, instead of saying that it isn't their style they tend to call it tacky. I noticed the croquenbouche too! I had one at my wedding (in addition to wedding cake) and it was a HUGE hit

This really sums it up well.

But a wedding with the tiffany-blue color, and a "classic elegance" feel seems beautiful.
  • I love Tiffany blue and I do not think this is tacky. I actually love it and if I had the budget to this I definitely would!
