Ferguson MO

This the most despicable situation I have ever watched on the news here in the US.

Apparently today some man charged the police with a knife, and was shot to death. Duh. What did you think was going to happen?

And then there's these outside agitators that show up at night to instigate the police. They'll probably show up tonight yelling racial discrimination for that too. What's wrong with America?

Re: Ferguson MO

  • It's way past out of control.  I guess there are deeper wounds than just the Brown shooting.

I'm all for peaceful demonstrations and independent investigations, but this is ridiculous.  How looting the stores of innocent business owners justice for the shooting death of Brown?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • There are some stories that just make my soul ache.  Michael Brown's death, and the resulting events, have gotten me to that terrible, sorrowful place.

The last time I felt this disheartened was after the Newton shootings and some of the fallout (such as the whole thing was a conspiracy theory and those children didn't even actually die).

There has always been a lot of tension between the people of St. Louis and the surrounding municipalties and the police.

  • The situation really breaks my heart.  I am an outsider to the whole thing and have never even visited the area, but based on the news coverage it seems there were already deep wounds in the St. Louis area that just hadn't healed.  The Brown shooting (which yes, seems completely unjustified) just broke open what was already there.

I understand the visceral rage behind the rioting and looting.  I do understand that impulse.  But of course it's not rational and it's making the situation drastically worse.  I really feel for everyone trying to have peaceful protest and move forward.

I remember the media reports of the 1970s Vietnam War protests.  The media focused on a few outsiders, and the impression from watching TV news was that student protests were violent.  They were mostly not.  We had the National Guard called out to control the campus of the University of Iowa, and students were sent home.  No good reason for it.  An accidental electrical fire in a shoddy building was blamed on protesters, and police over reacted when chasing a few guys.
I remember Martin Luther King in the deep south in the 1960s.  If you watched TV media, you could believe that the protestors were violent.  Footage shown was of shouting, struggling people, not the majority of peaceful walkers.
I think what happenned was a tragedy, but the media is inciting some of the anger.

As usual, I agree with @CMGragain‌.

I went to the University of Iowa for undergrad and heard stories about the era from a few professors.

My parents were very active in civil rights work - Freedom Summer, marches, etc. - and told me that most people were scared of the violence. My mom talked about a protest where the organizers trained everyone on how to de-escalate violent situations.

I'm sure that the media has escalated the situation. But I also believe that communities don't let things go this far if they truly feel connected or invested in your community - I fundamentally don't understand how else you can knowingly do thing a that hurt your neighbors. Then again, I also don't have experience with that type of rage.

  • This is just a sad situation overall. It truly breaks my heart.

There hasn't been ANY positive news lately between, Michael Brown and ISIS...

  • I feel like I haven't heard much about what actually happened with Michael Brown. Just the very basic facts that he was shot and unarmed. What I can't imagine is why you would chose to loot businesses and harm others who weren't remotely involved in the shooting. For what? What are you getting out of it?

Just sad and tragic all the way around.

  • I've seen a lot of stories (from various sources) that go through what happened and it sounds like it isn't as cut and dry as the media is making it out to be.

I've also read reports that the officer suffered a broken orbital bone that suggests that he was being attacked.

  • The rioting and looting doesn't surprise me. People riot and loot when their team wins the world series, and we're surprised a few jackasses are taking advantage of a tragedy?

  • The whole situation is tragic. And no matter what happened there will always be doubt. I personally wish, feel free to disagree, that the officer had a camera on him. Then maybe we could have had the facts and less chance of rioting.
