NWR-cupcake help

FSS's birthday is tomorrow and he wants me to make cupcakes for school like I did the last two years. He just started middles school so I was stoked when I called the school and they said he could bring them, but he would just pass them out to his friends during break since he has multiple classes. This means no more baking/decorating 3 dozen cupcakes.

I asked what he wants as far as cupcakes and he wants red velvet, but somehow wants bacon incorporated. This is the part I need help with; should I add bacon to the cupcakes themselves, make a bacon frosting, just sprinkle some on top? I love the sweet savory combo so ' m sure they will taste fine, I just have never thought to incorporate bacon into cupcakes.

Re: NWR-cupcake help

  • For kids, I would probably just sprinkle on top.
  • Cook the bacon, pat it dry REALLY well, and chop up the non-fat bits and sprinkle them on top of the frosting. Maybe just a tiny bit in the center.

I'm not crazy about all the bacon things but that's probably the best way to do it.

I would make crispy bacon then crumble it onto the icing

  • IDK about red velvet, but I've made french toast cupcakes with maple syrup frosting and a strip of bacon as garnish.

Red velvet is basically buttermilk and cocoa, not sure how well bacon blends with those flavors :/

Bacon as a topper is always good.

  • I just looked up french toast cupcakes and want those now! @Doeydo thank you for those links that should work perfect, unless FSS gets stuck with french toast cupcakes instead.

  • For my dog's birthday, he got a (made for dogs) cupcake with carrot cake, peanut butter frosting, and bacon crumbled on top.

    He thought it was delicious.

    Where are mine?!
  • I would also agree with sprinkling the bacon on top. There's a cupcake food truck in my city that makes a maple bacon cupcake. They just sprinkle some crispy bacon on top of the frosting. It is magical.

If I make the french toast ones I will find a way to send you one!  I still haven't decided I have gotten as far as making the bacon so my house smells wonderful.

The french toast cupcake sounds yummy!  I can vouch that Bacon is terrific with buttermilk biscuits and also quite good when broken up and added to chocolate...then again I'm southern and it is my opinion that bacon should qualify as a food group all on its own.

And just in case you are looking for a really good Red Velvet recipe...I made this for my SS's birthday cake and the whole family told me to throw away all other Red Velvet Recipes!

  • Well looks like I am just making chocolate and eating my weight in crispy bacon! I was going to give FSS the choice between the red velvet and the french toast cupcakes and he decided that he just wants plain cupcakes, no decoration, no bacon.

Now I am sitting here angry because I could have done something better with the bacon and happy that I didn't make the cupcakes during the day like I planned. Changes like this should have been told to me last night, the french toast cupcakes saved me. If I had just stuck to the red velvet and bacon plan I would have 2 dozen cupcakes he didn't want and I might end up choking him with one.
