Bury the Bourbon - Need advice on this Southern Tradition

Okay, so the Tradition is this "Southern folklore says that if you bury a bottle of bourbon at the site where the bride and groom are to be married it won’t rain on their wedding day. According to many believers, this must be done exactly one month before the wedding, the bottle must be completely full, and it must be buried upside down to ensure maximum weather persuasion."

My question is "How specific do you have to be regarding the ONE MONTH rule?!

Example: Our wedding is Saturday Oct 4th. Does that mean we bury September 4th (Which is a Thursday) or 4 weeks before (would be September 6th a Saturday like our wedding)"

  • I have never heard of this. Since it sounds like it's just a fun superstition, I'm sure any time around one month would be fine.

  • What a waste of bourbon!

Kidding, like @southernbelle0915 said, I think you'll be fine either way.

  • Definitely not a waste! You dig it up after the ceremony and take shots with everyone at the reception! Win-win my friend!! :)

I may have to start this tradition on the west coast....!  ;)

  • I just moved to Texas 2 years ago from California and I tell all my friends back in Cali to do this!

Total win-win! I'm so sad I didn't know about this!!

Ha, we're burying the bourbon next Wednesday! It would have been more convenient for us to go on a weekend, especially since our venue is about a 3 hour drive away, but we're just taking the day off work and using the excuse to get some other wedding stuff taken care of (caterer meeting, hair trial etc).

We're not superstitious people in general, but my fiancé's family has had rain at 3/3 weddings in the past couple of years, so we figure better safe than sorry! We're also planning to bury nice expensive bourbon (but have the groomsmen dig it up afterwards :-)).

  • @GARION

That is awesome! You will have to let me know next month if it worked or not!
  • I've never heard of this, but I wish I had.  I've lived in Kentucky and Georgia all my life.

    Where is this common?
  • I'm in Alabama and I've heard of the tradition. We're planning on burying the burbon too but we're really more into whiskey and moonshine so we're hoping to bury that instead but that idea was shot down quickly by my mom.

We live in Georgia and are getting married in NC... I think people have heard of it both places, but we first heard about it from a venue owner in NC.
  • I lived most of my life in Tallahassee, Baton Rouge, and Birmingham. Never heard of this before but as long as I can dig up the bourbon afterwards (I do love me some bourbon), I'm game.
  • Update: There was a 40% chance of rain at our ceremony time, and we had clear skies! Burying the bourbon worked! We met another just married couple the next morning at the b&b where we spent the night, and they thanked us for the weather :).

Also, drinking from the dirty bottle of bourbon outside of the reception hall was super fun.
  • Somehow I think the country club I'm having my wedding will not let me dig up their gold course...which is a shame...
