NWR: Maternity/New Mom Presents

So my sister is pregnant (YAY!) with her first child, my first future niece/nephew, and the first baby of our "generation" on both sides of the family. Her husband is also one of the oldest in his family and this is one of the first babies on his side as well. Everyone is really excited, and she's already been thrown three baby showers, with two more planned for later this fall.

Her birthday is coming up. I wanted to get her a present specifically for her. Right now I'm thinking a cute maternity top or cute nursing cardigan/bras. I want it to be focused on her, since all she is really thinking about is what the baby needs. Another thought I had is a nice maternity dress for holiday parties because the baby isn't due until January.

Anyone have any insight into cute maternity or post-maternity clothing brands? Or other gifts I'm not even thinking of?

  • I think clothing is hard because you can't be sure how big she'll be by the holidays.

What about a gift card to a nice restaurant so she and DH can have a nice dinner together before the baby comes?  Maybe you could even throw in a hotel room depending on where you live and how much you want to spend.

A spa day gift card for after the baby's arrival would also be nice, but if she isn't due until January it might be a bit early for that.  It could work for a Christmas present though.

  • Even a spa day for before the baby comes would be awesome. Growing a baby hurts.
  • A Pea in the Pod has some really cute stuff, but Lurker is right that the sizing can be really tricky. And you don't want to offend those often-delicate hormones by getting the wrong size, KWIM? Prenatal massage is a good idea if your friend normally likes massages, and my friends also loved getting pedicures once they got too big to reach their own feet!

  • I'd skip clothes and do a spa gift card, mani/pedi gift card, maybe a gift card to her salon for a cut and blow out?, or a giftcard for a date night with her hubby.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • My sister purchased her BFF a gift certificate for a pre-natal massage.  She was really grateful.

Or a day spa with a pool (according to sister's BFF if just felt amazing on her joints to just be able to float around).

  • When my sister was pregnant, I tried very hard to get her gifts that weren't baby-related. One of the best gifts I got her (Christmas, I think?) was a great set of pjs and a bunch of "baby safe" nail products. She loves painting her nails but was terrified of using toxic substances. Another thing that could be great is a night in a hotel for her and her DH-- a place with a pool that she can relax in and maybe have a romantic night away before things get crazy.

  • If you do want to lean towards the clothes, I would give her a gift card to a maternity store, rather than pick something out for her yourself.

After my friend had her first baby, I got her a nice pair of PJs.  She really appreciated the gift for her, since most things were for the baby.

I think the suggestions for a spa gift card is nice too.

All of this. And comfy stretchy pjs.

I'm the weird one and would LOVE a maternity holiday dress. I'm gonna go Google.

ETA: Pea in a Pod has SO many cute dresses!

  • Spa gift card. As a currently pregnant lady, I'd prefer something not baby-related (like maternity clothes) that I can use to pamper myself. Or a restaurant gift card so she can enjoy her last few date nights without a babysitter!
  • Holy shit. She's having 5 baby showers?

I second the spa gift card. When she gets super pregnant, painting her own toenails won't be very fun/graceful. If she's an accessories girl, you might just get her a cute scarf and earrings or something (i.e. nothing related to pregnancy or the baby).

  • Thanks for all the suggestions ladies! I think a spa day is probably going to be more welcome than any clothing. Maybe I'll get her a couple little things two, like the nail polish or unrelated pregnancy accessories.

And yes, @southernbelle0915, FIVE. She tried to tell people that she really didn't need all of them, but each one is being thrown by a different circle - our extended family, her in-laws, co-workers, players/parents (she and my BIL coach at the collegiate level together), and her friends. She says she feels like she's being paraded around like a show pony.
