Move over Mason Jars....

On the good authority of Michael's arts and crafts, Milk Jugs are the new Mason Jars!

(the noise you hear is the collective brain explosion of 100,000 mason jar brides).

Cue the pinterest hordes!!

Re: Move over Mason Jars....

  • Lol got that e-mail too. Rolled my eyes and thought of you ladies.

  • Milk JUGS or milk BOTTLES? Cus, like, old-fashioned glass milk jars aren't nearly so bad as mason jars (not something I'd ever use, but definitely before mason jars).

    Milk bottles:

Not un-cute (although certainly due to be way overdone).

    Milk jugs:

Not even a wee bit cute.

That really had me giggling, thinking of 1/2 gallon plastic milk containers sitting at each place setting at a highly formal wedding. At least they are white!

Or the paper milk cartons they serve with kids lunches!  You could totally paint them with your wedding color or even have them custom made with your menu or something written on the side!

  • I forgot everyone does their milk jugs different..

I thought it was this... (For bagged our milk)

Hahaha we used to get our milk like this!

And yeah milk bottles aren't so bad. Kinda like vintage coke bottles. Jugs...just no.

  • It's not so bad. They sorta look like vases. In real life I probably wouldn't notice they aren't, like I would a mason jar.

  • Same shit, different shape.
  • Gonna go ahead and call it - the NEXT new mason jar is gonna be Perrier and Voss bottles. (I actually used a Voss bottle as a vase one time. I was desperate.)

  • I'm still waiting for the hipster trend of using glass Coke and Pepsi bottles.

Mason jars are shorter and fatter than milk bottles, so it's only a matter of time before milk bottles turn into glass soda bottles. The types of glass containers used just keep getting taller and skinnier (sort of like hipsters!)
  • I don't know what you guys are talking about. This is perfect for a wedding!

  • Our venue gave us two milk bottles with the venue name etched on them when we booked it... I should have known then.

    ^^^^I can get behind that.

  • I'd pictured milk jugs too, and I just could not wrap my brain around that.
  • I like the shape of milk jugs, but I have a fondness for bottles, and glass in general.  My venue coordinator sets up the tables and I think she will be very upset with the weight of centerpieces I come up with :-P  I bought a bunch of tall bottles, I'm not sure what was originally in them, maybe wine?  Some have those wired corks still on them.

I really do love the turquoise color of the antique mason jars, since it's one of my wedding colors anyway.  HOWEVER, their popularity has pushed them outside of my price range.  I went to a flea market this past weekend and some of them were marked $40 each!!

    GET. OUT.

I thought the whole appeal of mason jars for decoration was that they were cheap?!

This kind of worries me, FI and I were going to make apple butter as favors- hopefully the little jars we normally get aren't marked up! Eek!

NO WAY am I paying NO DAMN 40 DOLLARS to have a flipping antique MASON JAR. Thin out some turquoise acrylic paint and dip that mfer.

Normal canning jars have not lost their mind, at least not as of this weekend.

  • @hikebikebemerry , Mason jars are still mass produced, and I'm sure those are what you meant you wanted to use!

I'm talking about the ones that are ACTUALLY vintage, like these:

  • @alucky23

I always loved the old jars with the flip lid (I'm not sure what the actual name for the lid is).

It was kind of two separate thoughts:
1st thought: Wow! That is expensive for a vintage mason jar! (I remember them being much less just a few years ago.
2nd thought: I hope that the industry hasn't raised the price based on demand, because that is going to make all of my canning plans more expensive.

  • I don't know how big you want to make your portions, but my friend had favors (M&Ms) in a cute little tiny jar with one of those pressure lids, although I've never canned so I don't know if it would work!

They were kind of like this but I think hers were a bit taller/skinnier.

Not every vintage one was $40 but they were definitely higher than I imagined!

These are the kind I'm using. Those really big 1/2 gallon ones cost close to $100.

  • LMAO I got that email from Michael's too!  I rolled my eyes so freakin' hard!

I have a couple of these in my kitchen for decoration- I love colored glass, and my kitchen is yellow, aqua, and royal  blue.  Fortunately I got them for $5 each years ago.
