Doctors. Gah! Venting inside!

My company changed our insurance, so I need to find a new gyno. I contacted a gyno I found through the website (which BTW, there are only 3 doctors in my area that apparently accept my new insurance). The first available appointment they had for me was in November. I will run out of my birth control pills by then. Actually, I'll run out of my pills while I'm on my HM. Fantastic. I call my old gyno (that doesn't accept my new insurance) to see if my old doctor will write a prescription of my BC pills for just one or two months. They're supposed to open at 9am. I get the office closed message until 10:30. When they finally open the office, it takes me 8 tries to get through.

I explain my story to the receptionist. I then have to tell my story to 3 more people. Then I get to leave a message. *fingers crossed*

After that, I call my dentist to schedule an appointment. Again, the offices are closed. Call back and they seem to have opened today around 11am. However, I keep getting a busy signal.

Why is this so fucking difficult!?!?!?!? Just give me pills and fill my damn cavity!

  • Regarding the BC, if that didn't get resolved, try seeing your PCP and explaining the situation. I had to do that because my obgyn appt was so far out and I would run out. She was kind enough to write me a 5 month supply.

  • What is going on today that everyone is opening late. Weird.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • You could always go to Family Planning, too, if it really comes down to it.
  • My gyno does phone approvals with the pharmacy to extend prescriptions for up to 3 months if needed. It comes in handy if you're a dumbass and lose your pills while traveling.

  • I'd get with my PCP about it if I was you. They've been pretty good about hooking me up there.

    That's a good idea. Thanks!
  • So I was finally able to get my dentist. Thankfully they can see me next week.

I feel like every time I have to go to the doctor, it turns into a huge pain in the ass. And this applies to my PCP and my gyno - those are really the only doctors I see often. The dentist's office is usually pretty good, aside from the fact that I have no dental insurance and have to pay for everything out of pocket.
  • I've gone to planned parenthood in a pinch for birth control refills. No gyno appointment, just fill out some paperwork, answer some questiosn and they'll write you a script. But seriously though, why must it all be so difficult?!

Ditto Sugargirl.  I asked my General Pracitioner to write me a prescription for BC.  I needed a check up anyways, so I went in and she did a physical complete with pap smear and I came out with a prescription good for the next 12 months.  If you can't get into the Gyno until November, that would be a good avenue to explore.

  • If all else fails, there's Planned Parenthood.
  • I've always run to Planned Parenthood in these situations. They're much easier.

In a pinch, you might also try a doc-in-a-box. The nurse practitioners will do prescriptions, depending on their specific rules.

  • The gyno office drives me insane!  I was due for a check up in December.  Finally got an appointment in Feb.  Every appointment I had go cancelled due to snow.  I call back in April to reschedule.  They tell me call back in August.  I call back in August and they're booked till January!!!!!

How is that even possible!!!!  I finally find a new dr get an appointment for next week and my boss asked if I can change it because she needs to leave early.

Hear that?!?  That's me banging my head on my desk.

This whole fiasco started because my normal BC was discontinued and changed to some chewable stuff.  Like I'm supposed to trust that shit!

Good Luck!  Try not to loose your shit.

  • I think I'd go crazy if I had to deal with US health insurance. I feel for you, @ClimbingBrideNY!

  • I have had to go to the walk in clinic a couple of times to top up my BCP.  They write it and talk to me about a pap, then I tell them I booked with my family doctor and he's booked solid until "THIS DATE" so I need to have a few pills between now and then.

I did get that pap, it was just a few months later than I anticipated.  It took me a bit longer to work up the courage.  I hate paps :(

  • My yearly gyno appointments are always on Christmas eve.  When we're finished, we book for the following year.  See if that's possible?
  • I've always just gone to my primary care doc for pap & birth control.  I've never actually been to a real gyno.  Although, I think I may need to find one now because I'm thinking about switching to birth control that my PCP won't do (they only do pills).

There is an urgent care facility near us that is SUPER fast and really nice. I have gone there for random stuff and they are much more efficient than my PCP.
  • I thought I was the only one who had to deal with this booking things out months in advanced with my gyno. I called September of last year to schedule my gyno appointment for November, turns out they couldn't see me until the last week of January of this year. I thought it was just my gyno. Luckily I was good on BCP until March or else I would have gone apeshit on them.
