My FI was sworn in yesterday

My fiance was sworn in to the Army yesterday and I am nervous and excited! We can officially set our wedding date now that we know his training dates! Sometime in December, probably any date we can get from the 26th to the 30th. The question is, is it in bad taste to have a wedding in between Christmas and New Years? It's probably the only time we have to get married because he has a break, because he leaves in 6 weeks for Basic.

Re: My FI was sworn in yesterday

  • I don't know if I would say it is in bad taste, but expect a lot of declines. Unless you are a close relative or a VERY close friend of mine, I would decline any wedding around the holidays.

  • It's fine as long as you know the important people you want there can make it and don't have a problem with it. Closer to Dec 30 is better in my opinion, does the 30 fall on a Friday or Saturday?

  • The 30th is a Tuesday
  • A family friend's son had his wedding the day after Christmas. The parents and siblings of the couple attended the wedding, and the event was held at the POG's house. They had the ceremony in the yard, and then went inside for dinner.

If you want small and intimate, that's a good way to go.

  • As others said, no necesarily bad taste, but expect a lot of declines. I would try to do it on the weekend for sure. Do you have many out of town guests or are most of them local?

Almost all local, only a few distant relatives.
  • One of my best friends got married the weekend between Christmas and new years.  It was 4 hours away for me, but I made the trek because we've been friends since the 8th grade.  Their wedding was well attended, especially considering the wedding was in Dallas (he's from Houston, she's from Kansas).

I say go for it!  Added bonus - I'm not sure if you're planning a church wedding, but the church is likely to be decorated beautifully for Christmas, so that will look beautiful in pics!
  • Honestly if most of your guests are local I don't think it would be that big of a deal. If I didnt have to travel I would go to a post Christmas wedding for sure!
  • That's great news, congrats! You can have the wedding then but like pps said you'll have some declines unless you're inviting immediate family and closest friends!

  • Congrats to your FI!  I don't think it's in bad taste at all, especially considering your schedule, but as other's have said, expect something small.

I got married on NYE this past year. It was a Tuesday. We expected a lot of declines because his family/friends were all coming from out of state, but we still had a great turnout.

My wedding date is the 27th this year. I know Aunts/Uncles are surprising me by already buying tickets. It is not in bad taste, but expect declines.

Planning has been nice. There are off-season discounts and nothing is booked. Also my venue is already decorated at that time.  :) So more money saved and a gorgeous wedding.

  • Well if it is in poor taste then I guess I should move my wedding. We r getting married on the 27th this year and expect a decent turn out. However, both of our families are very local.

  • I'm also getting married on the 27th of this year! It will be small-ish, but everyone has responded well to the date. And I'm totally excited that the church is already decorated! It's beautiful (and cheap!--though my mom is giving an extra "donation" towards the flowers this year.)
  • Good to know! Now I just need to start calling places!
