XP: Gastronomic honeymoon/favorite restaurants

I posted over on Honeymoons but I'm curious what you all have to say, too. I'm thinking of putting together a foodie's paradise honeymoon (we'll see if it happens, but I like it as an experiment even if it doesn't play out). Starting point is Noma in Copenhagen. I saw a show featuring the chef and I think I might die and go to heaven if I eat there.

Where are places you've eaten that you've loved? Go crazy, I don't need a particular country/continent/state. Highbrow, lowbrow, and everything in between welcomed!

My DH and I kind of did this on our honeymoon. We drove to Florida from Illinois and researched fun/good/cheap restaurants to try on our way down and back. Basically, we got ideas from the shows Food Paradise and triple D, and some top ten and best of lists online. It was a lot of fun!

We hit Prince's Hot Fried Chicken Shack in Nashville and Bone Garden Cantina and Hankook Taqueria in Atlanta. We tried Hawker's Asian Street Fare and El Potro in Orlando. And we just stopped at The Dog of Nashville on the way home because DH wanted a hot dog.

I can't remember the names of most the places I ate. Honestly, I followed my nose and looked at the crowd. If it smelled good, they were getting my money.

@beethery I love Florence so much. I had the most fantastic meal there at a little family-owned restaurant that our concierge recommended--to this day I have no idea what it's called or where it was, but it was the first time I had ever eaten spaghetti with sardines, which was life-changing. And their house red was the best "table wine" I've ever had.

Um, well, good luck getting reservations. Most of that stuff is 30-60 days in advance and is basically a lottery, so you're typically lucky to get a reservation at all, let alone to multiple restaurants within a month of each other.

I went to The French Laundry recently, not sure if that counts. Also Ink in LA does some fun stuff that I like. And it's pretty easy to get in there! I'd love to hit up Per Se in NYC and Alinea in Chicago.

Well, the wedding is 11 months away, so I have a little bit of time! Mainly I'm just pretty excited to get yummy ideas. Even if I can't get 'em all in in one trip, I like to dream...

BLURG I studied abroad in Italy and gained about 78 thousand pounds and NO REGRETS WERE HAD. I lived in Perugia; if you're ever there, Quatro Passi was my pizza joint and Parma's sandwiches will change your life (the day I left, I ordered about 5 to bring back to America with me).

I always recommend Churchkey for those visiting DC--hundreds of craft beers and delicious food to boot.

La Super-Rica in Santa Barbara, CA for some awesome, authentic Mexican food. Back when DH was FI, he took me there the first time I came to visit him in an attempt to get me to move out sooner than I had planned on.

We found one absolutely amazing culinary experience in all three big cities we stayed in in Spain- Barcelona, Seville and Madrid. They were all tappas styles. The Barcelona place had everything on pieces of baguette. You took what you wanted and they counted plates. We stuffed our faces and it was remarkable inexpensive.

We gifted my son and his wife dinner at Alinea. It came close to $700 with gratuity, but they said it was worth every penny. I hope you get a chance to go.

I studied in Madrid and just got back from a trip to Barcelona this summer. Spain is basically my food mecca--everything about it makes me happy.

And you're correct re: drinks--I don't drink a lot of rum in the States, but damn it if the mojitos in Spain aren't epic!

What were the reservations like @MobKaz? Was it done through phone or online? Do you know how long in advance or how long it took them to get one?

He made reservations by phone. This was two years ago. I believe it is now done through an online ticketing system. The turn around time was about three months if I remember correctly, but they wanted a weekend night.

Best meal - this place in Italy off the Mont Blanc Tunnel. My BM took us (first marriage) on our belated honeymoon in Chamonix. It was in this lovely old chateau with all of the rooms set up with tables. You were served family style. It was an insane amount of food and all of it amazing. I remember that ripe fruit in baskets up the stone stairs...

And then the second incarnation of Bastide here in LA with Walter Manzke at the helm. We eat like rock stars that night. With the rock star bill. I'm still bummed they shuttered that one.

And this little German restaurant outside Frankfurt - Abthof. Oh, we ate there like three times. Amazing every darn time.

I like cruises because of the choices. And always disappointed when the food is not good.+

I think that anywhere you go, you can get great food, but a lot of the food is really standard. I think it's probably to just plan around cities you're interested in, then look for great recommendations in areas you'll already be in or near. I've seriously had some really great food in every city and/or country I've ever visited. It's not all about the fanciest restaurants either; sometimes the little hole in the wall is fantastic.

Okay, so we love food and are decidedly on the poor side, so we haven't gone as many exotic places, but we did and do splurge a bit on food on our trips.

Our anniversary tradition is the Melting Pot, because yay fondue.

For our honeymoon, we spent a week in Virginia and did Colonial Williamsburg (Kings Arms Tavern), Busch Gardens (Das Festhaus has the best food, and we went to the Food and Wine festival in late May/early June of this year with my parents as well), and Monticello (which actually has a very cool little cafe).

Our most recent trip was Puerto Rico and man, we had some amazing food and drinks. We had initially picked it just because it was a Caribbean trip we could do sans passports, but we have become big fans of Puerto Rican food. They cook plantains a million and one ways, all delicious, and if you want other types of food, all the big hotels have multiple themed restaurants. The El San Juan, which was right across the street from where we were staying, has for example a Puerto Rican restaurant, an Italian one, a Japanese one, a wine bar/bistro, and a Southern barbecue joint on the roof. We were also able to walk down the beach to a bar overlooking the ocean, La Playita, which had great food and even better drinks. There are even a couple restaurants in Old San Juan that do flamenco shows and serve Spanish food alongside the local favorites, and we really enjoyed the one we went to.
