NWR: Would you try wardrobe rental?

I came upon this concept sort of through falling into an internet hole from a fashion blog, and I'm intrigued.  You fill out your style preferences and sizes.  For $50 per month, they ship you three clothing items and two accessories.  You wear them as long as you want, then send it back, and they immediately send you new items.  Theoretically you could hang onto the stuff for a long time, or exchange it constantly.  You can buy whatever you want to keep by just not sending it back.

I'm thinking this might be an interesting way to change up my wardrobe without accumulating a lot of trendy stuff.  I've already rented dresses from RTR numerous times, so the idea isn't totally crazy to me.  I do wish it was structured not as a constant monthly charge, more like a per-delivery fee so I could use it off and on.

Has anybody tried something like this (I'm thinking of Gwynnie Bee, although this is a different site)?

I probably would, just to accent my wardrobe.

  • I might do it. That sounds fun.
  • If it's a straight monthly fee whether you like the items or not, then no thanks. I'm too picky so subscription type services don't work for me. I finally canceled my birchbox and similar subscriptions because I ended up throwing a way half the stuff. None of the choices that JustFab offered were what I wanted.

But otherwise, I'd be interested. I tend to buy things that I think I love, but then they only get worn a couple times before being relegated to the back of the closet. So depending on the pricing structure, it could be nice to rent and return items for less than the price of buying.

  • @blabla89 Yeah, it's a straight fee every month.  You pay extra to purchase stuff.

I am also thinking of doing StitchFix, which isn't a rental option.  You pay $20 and fill out a style profile and share your Pinterest board; they choose clothes and send them; you try on at home and buy what you like.  The $20 is credited towards your purchase.  This is more like "I'm just way too busy to shop" rather than a borrowing service.

See, I LOVE my Birchbox.  I have found so much great stuff through there.  And even if I don't love things enough to purchase full-size, I usually use up the samples at the gym.

  • I might like this because I don't like to invest in trendy stylish pieces, but I want to wear them. But I have a hard to fit body and would have to know that stuff would fit me otherwise it would be a waste.
  • Nope.  If I want something, I'll buy it.

Ditto.  Wearing clothes that other people have worn skeeves me out.  I'm a messy eater, so everything gets drips or drops and I'm having to be a stain fighting ninja.  And, I have a hard to fit shape (plus sized, all weight in middle, short with long legs), so I'm constantly having things altered to fit me right. I'd rather have my clothes be all mine.
  • Yeah I wouldn't try it. I don't like people I don't know touching me so wearing their clothes will give me nightmares. My clothes are part of my bubble so that will be a no go ha.

  • Sounds alright.  I'd have to have a look at the site and see whether I thought the clothing would be appropriate for me.  I'm not particularly in to investing in trendy items, so something like this could work really well.

I buy a lot of vintage, so renting clothes isn't a problem, as long as I'm not being sent things that are completely trashed.

I grew up shopping only at the Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. so I'm not really hung up on the "other people have worn it" aspect.  For that price I'd trust the company to clean everything appropriately.

The site I'm considering is http://www.letote.com.  They seem to have a decent mix of trendy and more work-appropriate stuff.  The jewelry looks better than the clothes, and they have a jewelry-only rental service which might be worth doing if the clothing doesn't seem to be my style/fit/whatever.

ETA for jewelry only, I've also heard good things about RocksBox, but never tried it.

  • I guess this would be a good idea to try out styles before you fully commit to them. Though I'm sure the stuff I'd really like I might forget to send back......

I am unsure how I feel about this. I didn't think about others wearing the clothes. But Idk if it changes it for me, because I expect the clothes to be washed really well. And are we allowed to wash them? I might wash them myself.

  • I checked out the site you are looking at, JC. I don't like a lot of the clothes :( I couldn't find 5 things I loved. Argh. I love this concept, though.
  • I'm in the same boat.  I love the idea, but I wasn't totally in love with the clothes they had on offer.  I'll check back periodically and see what new things they get in.

  • I would totally rent clothes from Rent-a-Swag.

I haven't seen a lot of Parks and Rec, but this looks hilarious.  I love when TV shows carry the story over onto websites (HIMYM does this a lot).
