NWR: It's not nice to steal from people.

Yesterday morning, about 15 minutes after I opened my salon, 3 guys came in asking about appointments, made me totally uncomfortable, and then stole my purse. Of course it's a giant bag with my entire life inside -- my wallet, credit cards (which they started shopping on immediately), IDs, social security card (stupid of me to have it in there, I know), my Nook, the only expensive pair of sunglasses I own, about $250 worth of makeup, my house keys & work keys, etc. Also, I NEVER EVER have cash on me but I had recently gone to the bank to take out money to give my photographer & of course that was in my purse.

So I spent most of the day at the police station, cancelling credit cards, and waiting at the DMV to apply for a new ID. They ended up catching the guys (while they were shopping on my dime) & arresting them. Turns out they robbed some other people as well and in some cases were violent and used a box cutter as a weapon. So I know that I'm lucky that at least they didn't hurt me. Unfortunately, they had already ditched all my stuff by the time they were caught & I'll never see any of it again.

Basically, I'm really sad & wish I had my stuff back and needed to vent. Also, it's pretty disheartening that people really deem such things appropriate. I tend to always think people are intrinsically good, and then things like this happen & I realize that a lot of people are awful jerks!

  • Oh no, I am so sorry that happened to you!  Thank goodness you are okay and they caught them.  I know it sucks to have to deal with replacing everything, but it's all things that can be replaced.  And if they were using credit cards, you should definitely be able to dispute the charges!  Good luck and internet hugs to you!

  • I'm so sorry! I hope everything gets replaced or resolved soon, that's terrible!

    I'm the fuck
    out.

  • I am so sorry. That truly stinks.

I hope it all gets resolved soon!

  • Oh man that's rough! At store I used to work at, I found out these two guys stole a pair of expensive sunglasses (it was an optical store). They came in another time and  I was on them like a hawk. I was so proud of myself that they didn't steal anything...

...Until I went back to my register and realized that my iPhone was missing. I reviewed the cameras and saw that one guy reached over the counter and grabbed my phone. I was heartbroken. And that was just a phone! I can't imagine losing my whole purse. :(

Good thoughts and I hope that you can take care of everything smoothly and quickly.
  • Oh no, that must have been terrible.  It sounds really traumatic and scary.

I'm so glad they caught the guys who did that.  I hope everything gets replaced/resolved.

Also if you really had that much valuable stuff in there, it might be worth putting in a claim on your homeowners' or renters' insurance.  I know our plan covers up to 10% of the covered value even outside the home.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that, but so glad to hear that they got caught. Sending you lots of hugs! I second JC's suggestion to check into what your insurance may cover.

  • Thanks guys! I was an anxious mess all yesterday. The security video actually showed one of the guys crawling on the floor (we have a high desk top so I couldn't even see him) trying to figure out how he could get back there and what he could take!

@JennyColada - That's awful! My phone is the only thing I still have only because I had just taken it out and put it in my pocket.
@JCBride2015 - Of course we were just discussing getting renter's insurance last week, as we don't currently have it :(

  • Oh no!  How scary and terrible.  I hate thieves.  :(  I'm glad they caught them, and hopefully you can get your IDs and stuff straightened out.

  • Not the Nook! I'm devastated for you!

How awful that your photographer money was in there.. Is there any way you can get reimbursed for the stolen items since you don't have insurance??

  • Does your salon have somewhere "secure" to place your belongings (like a locker or anything)? If not, and if you're expected to leave your purse just behind the counter, then they really should be responsible for replacing your items (since they're not providing a secure place). In my case, though, I wasn't supposed to keep my phone on the counter (despite my District Manager wanting hourly updates on how the store is doing via text...so I'm not really sure how reasonable it was for me to constantly be unlocking my phone to check for communication from the DM).
  • @Sugargirl1019 - Seriously, FI teases me because I'm always reading. I LOVE my Nook (and it had the BEST cover ever on it). I don't know that I have any options for reimbursement. I was REALLY hoping that they would still have my bag with everything in it when they were caught, but the police said they likely took off, sold what they could, took the credit cards & cash, and dumped the rest who knows where :-/

My wallet was stolen out of our motorcycle tank bag this summer. I had no cash in it and that was all they were after. They dumped my wallet in a parking ramp across the street from where it was stolen from and someone found it a week later. They called one of my credit card companies who called me and put us in touch with each other and she mailed it back to me.

It is devastating and leaves you feeling violated. Hopefully someone might find yours and return it. In the meantime, you should look into signing up for LifeLock. I did for peace of mind since I stupidly also had my social security card in my wallet too.

  • Check pawn stores.

My violin was stolen, and the police checked pawn stores for the ID inside and found it.

  • That sucks! I'm so sorry.
  • Not to be Nancy Negative but this happened in midtown Manhattan. I even peeked into garbage cans up and down the 34th St area (it's giant and hot pink so would be easy to spot). Then I realized they pick up garbage constantly around here because of the high volume of people and trash. Likely it's gone forever - either at the dump (where I'd prefer it get destroyed over identity theft) or a random person picking through the trash has my life. (Though secretly I'm hoping someone will miraculously bring it to me). Blah.

One credit card company was telling me the name of a store that something had been charged at only a few minutes prior & couldn't give me an address. The woman said to me "it's a women's accessories shop - can't you figure out where it is by that?" Ummm nope, there are probably a hundred of them within a few blocks.

@msstaticfancypants - what is LifeLock? I should probably look into this!

    SITB:
It's a monitoring company. For a monthly fee they will monitor your credit reports and your information. If someone applies for a loan or attempts to open a credit card in your name, etc. they will notify you and you will then have to say yes, it was me or no, it was an attempt to steal my identity. They will then notify the company running your report or opening the credit to alert them. It then gets shut down so that you don't end up being charged for someone else's toys or whatnot.

None of my cards or anything "appeared" to me messed with in my wallet before it was dumped but I still signed up. I get a free copy of my credit reports each month and have peace of mind. I highly recommend it.
