RSVP on my website and not including cards?

OK, I am all about making this easier on me and FH. I want to use the website to have people RSVP instead of using the traditional cards. also to gather addresses we are planning on using Postable.com. I am posing it on Facebook. emailing it, and will hand them my iPhone the page loaded if I have to.. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone has done this or is doing this, and how it is going or has gone...

I understand that it is not traditionally done and people may be confused at first but we are 13 months away, so I have plenty of time to get them used to the website. I may have them go there to look up all the information, so they have to get on the site for the address anyways...

this is an effort to save money, but also to save us from waiting on cards in the mail

Re: RSVP on my website and not including cards?

  • We are doing it - not through Postable.  We are mailing out some invitations to those we know will actually come to our destination wedding or would expect an invitation (smile) and then we are having a website using google docs to collect RSVPs vice having a card mailed back to us.  Everyone else will get notified via facebook and such.

Mainly doing this to cut costs, also to save time (moved up wedding by 6 months-eek).  Also it benefits b/c me and my fiance are geographically separated.

  • Mixed feelings on the approach so I'll stay out of that.

Just don't use the TK RSVP tool.

  • There is nothing wrong electronic responses.  You do need to offer an alternative, like a telephone contact number, for people who don't use the internet.  Pre-printed RSVP. cards are not necessary.

Glitch after glitch after glitch. I had tons of problems with my website and RSVPs. Some people have lost entire guest lists. Avoid all of TK's (the knot's) tools.
  • Please avoid posting wedding info on facebook. It's tacky for people who weren't invited to see the details.
  • Ya, I don't plan on posting public on Facebook, I may use the messenger to contact people I don't have an email..

I don't want to provide phone number I can do an email, I just didn't want multiple places to look.

I also plan on keeping a back up some how..

thank you for your feed back.. I have asked a few people in person, and I think I am going to go for it.

  • An email wouldn't help someone who doesn't have a smartphone or use a computer (like grandparents).  I would also recommend your phone # (shouldn't be a big deal, typically someone you'd invite to your wedding would have you or your FI's #) or just do a few RSVP cards (can print them at home) for those who may prefer that method  :)
  • We're mailing out all of our invitations, but only including reply cards in about 10-15 - to the older/less tech savvy people. Otherwise we have people responding to our website that my sister set up. I've also heard bad things about TK rsvp, so I'd recommend setting it up elsewhere.
  • A friend of mine was in a wedding where the bride did that. Only 5 guests used the online RSVP. The bride had to call the rest of the guests to confirm & her numbers were still off because guests didn't tell her that they were bringing a +1.
  • I got an invitation with an electronic RSVP recently and we got an error stating that we weren't on the guest list when we tried to RSVP...  So make sure that your system works properly! I'm pretty sure we were B-list invites, and that sort of confirmed it. Don't have a B-list, but if you do, make sure they can RSVP!

  • well, I don't think that is a problem since I didn't know it was a thing to have a "b-list"... whoever receives an invitation will be listed, along with family members..

  • I think that this is a 'know your crowd' thing - we sent out traditional invitations and did online RSVPs. Everyone including our grandparents regularly use email so it wasn't a problem for us. We also didn't have an issue with people RSVP'ing by the due-by date. We actually did use The Knot online RSVP's and didn't really have any glitches - but we do seem to have been in the minority on that one!
  • We did email RSVP. Everyone on our invite list emails regularly, so it worked out fine. If I was inviting an older crowd, I probably would have included RSVP card in theirs. We're only inviting 40 people though, so things are simpler for us.

I made my invites on Vistaprint and I included the following information on my invitations.  I did not have elderly folks on my guest list, who potentially could find this to be a PITA, so this seemed fine.  We included a number for anyone who doesn't have a desire to email, though we did just state "email" on the invites.  It's been fine so far.  I have most of my replies in.

One problem with electronic RSVPs for a paper invitation is that people have to type out the email or web address in order to RSVP. We had numerous people come to us telling us our website was "broken" when in fact they had typed the URL incorrectly. It bothered me thinking our guests thought we'd sent out incorrect information, but it felt rude to correct them. It made for a few awkward exchanges.

I am not saying this is what happened in this case, just offering another perspective :-)
