Cost of wedding cake

For those of you that are either already married or selected your wedding cake, what do you think the ball park range of a cake for 150 guest should be? I know this varies by the design of the cake but I want to make sure I have a rough estimate before I go meet with potential bakers.

This varies so much that it would be impossible to say. It depends on design, flavors, and even the area that you live in.

Just to give you an idea though I paid $6.50 per person for my cake.

Hi OP - I agree with @tammym1001 - the price of a wedding cake varies a lot depending on what area/type of area you're in. I paid $2.20 per cupcake. Definitely dependent upon which baker you use, what kind of cake you are looking for, how intricate the design is and where you live.

I paid $2.50 per cupcake, I then had them create custom cupcake liner/holder things, I rented a cupcake stand from them, had a small 6" cake made for cutting and then delivery so total it came to $500.

This. When we were looking into bakers, it was anywhere between $3/piece for a really basic cake up to almost $10/piece for a top of the line, super fancy cake.

The places we looked at had baseline pricing that basically included chocolate or vanilla with a basic buttercream and then you could upgrade to different flavors, certain fillings, fondant, decorations, etc. Just depends on how fancy you want to go.

For budgeting purposes, the most important thing to consider is geometry! Walmart/Sam's/Big Box average slices are SUPER tiny, so what you pay per square inch is a lot different than a baker who has a 1x3x5 average size slice.

The more budget you give to your baker to work with the more you'll be able to get. If you go in with a budget of $6-10/slice you've got something most bakers will be able to work with depending on your design. For DD's First Communion, the tiered cake from an upper end baker was ~$350 for 50 guests, however she had full design control (the more control you hand over to the baker often the more you'll get for the money - within reason - she had all of the details such as invite, DD's dress, etc.)... The most important detail is the taste, and I found the level of the baker doesn't necessarily correlate to better tasting cake for the money, however budgeting a reasonable amount for your are (obviously small town America is going to be different average than NYC where that $10 should be closer to $20) ensures that you have wiggle room and can even come in under budget.

We are just in the process of deciding on our wedding cake.

We will be doing cupcakes for 125 people, plus the top cutting cake. We will be averaging 1.5 - 2 cupcakes a person, so will be ordering around 200 total.

And the quote we got from where we will be ordering is about $300.

(Although we are ordering from a family friends business, so are getting a discount)

Ours was about $5 a slice, in the greater DC area. We had two flavors, neither of which was basic, plus a custom designed cake that included some hand painted details. The price was actually less than we had budgeted for, so I was able to get DH a groom's cake as an additional surprise with what was leftover in the budget. It's always good to over-budget :-)

We went with a lady who recently started a cake business. We had a 4 tiered round cake (12", 10", 8", 6") and a groom's cake (8", 6" rounds). The design was fairly basic and we had 3 flavors. She charged us a flat rate of $200 including delivery and the cake was amazingly delicious! It was not intricate or perfect, but it worked for us. Other bakeries in our area (southwest Virginia) charged between $2-$5/slice.

Our wedding cake and groom's cake came out to total about $7 or $8 per person and there will be roughly 200 guests. The wedding cake is pretty simple but the groom's cake has a lot of detail. I live in a major city in southern New England.

ETA: wedding cake is 4 tiers (alternating tiers of white cake+strawberry champagne filling and lemon cake+raspberry filling; groom's cake is red velvet)

My cake for 150 people with just butter cream is $700. With fondant it would have been more.

$7.50 x 200 = $1,500.00

That seems like a lot for a simple cake with 2 flavors; even if the groom's cake is more complicated with one flavor.

Mine was $3.75 per serving for 200 servings, with fresh fruit filling and cream cheese buttercream frosting. Relatively simple decoration.

I just asked for a quote from a local baker for 50 - 60 people. She gave me a quote of $800-$1000. That is $20 a person!! I almost had a heart attack.

Did you request multiple exotic flavors or any form of complicated decorations? Those can add up quickly, especially if you happen to be in a region that's expensive to begin with.

We booked our baker today and we're paying $7 per slice and our cake serves 100 people (we have 60 on our guest list but that doesn't include plus 1's). The total is $814 including tax and delivery fees. We're getting a three tier cake and each tier will be a different flavor. My inspiration was this picture that I found on Pinterest:

Ours was $1,200 for 110 people. It was from a very nice bakery and comprised of "all natural" ingredients. It was relatively simple in design but it did have in-house hand blown sugar pieces.

I believe that ours was $7 per slice plus decorations. We ended up paying just about $1,000 for 120 people.
