Registry for convenience?

This might sound cray cray, but I need help! As some of you might know, I'm getting ready to move and buy a new home. However, we're not selling our current home. So, I now have to duplicate almost everything we own. So, I was thinking of creating a registry just to create a comprehensive list of everything we need. We really need it all- dishes, towels, flatware, vacuum, kitchen gadgets, etc. I obvously would not share this with anyone and we are not planning any events that would cause people to want to buy us any gifts. I just don't want to look like a idiot if someone sees a registry out there with tons of stuff and we're already married. Is this a good idea or not so much?

Re: Registry for convenience?

  • I think it's totally fine. You can create a private amazon registry and share it only with H. I have one that I keep and add stuff I like or might want through out the year. It's very helpful come gift giving time, so I'm sure it would be helpful to have a "need" list for the same reason.

  • I haven't done a registry, but I guess I don't see the point...?

Are there like suggestions on a registry and that's why you want to use it?

My friend tells me that people register for housewarming (apartment warming!) parties in NYC, so I suppose it can be done without pretending you are getting married!

  • Amazon might be the better way to go. More privacy!
  • I keep a private Amazon Wish List with household stuff we need, intend to buy later when budget allows, etc.  Totally not weird, only shared with Fi, and nobody can Google it.

The point in my head was that we need so much stuff that I want to make sure that we don't miss anything. I plan on buying almost all of it at once because we'll essentially have nothing when I get out there. I like shopping off of a list just to be thorough.

I like the Amazon idea, though.

  • Definitely go with a private amazon wish list. They are the greatest.

  • I used Pinterest to keep track of things I want for the house.  The board is private, so no one sees it but me.
  • I think that's fine. I'm planning on doing something for baby 2 to figure out what we still need.
  • I like the Amazon and Pinterest options over creating an actual registry.
  • Do it!  We did this last time we moved-mostly because it was an easy way for us to make a list...and after the date passes (you can set it for housewarming or other celebration too) you get a nice completion discount coupon from a lot of places (this was great at Crate and Barrel since we needed some new furniture).  And of course you can make it private.  Have fun!
  • Dude, I'd make the registry. I'd make it at BB&B, or Target, or Williams Sonoma, or Walmart, or wherever you usually buy kitchen stuff. Somebody finds it, either they'll ask you about it - at which point you can explain - or they'll just buy you something and ship it to you, at which point you dance because it's one less thing to buy! (And thank them graciously and maybe explain, hahaha).

Also completion discount like freebread said.

  • I think you can make a Macys registry  private. I did that when I first created my registry, because I didn't want it to be "live' yet.  The sales associate made it public when we went into the store to add everything else.
