Appetizer Ideas for an August Farm Wedding

I'm planning my wedding for next August 2015. My fiance owns a dairy farm and the reception is in a barn on the property. We want to plan appetizers that can be plated and ready to be put out during the cocktail hour allowing for minimal assistance. Anyone have any great ideas besides crackers/cheese and fresh fruit?

  • caprese skewers
cheese stuffed dates wrapped in bacon
bagel chip topped with cream cheese and smoked salmon
    melon wrapped in prosciutto

There are literally thousands of options. Are you looking for cold or hot only? Dietary restrictions? A certain theme? Try poking around on google and recipe websites for inspiration.

  • Stuffed mushrooms are another option.
Tomato and mozzarella salad in little serving cups would be cute and adorable!
You could also do a strawberry and goat cheese skewer.
  • Bacon-wrapped potato bites
    Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with goat cheese
    Mini grilled cheeses

Remember you'll just have to be very aware of food safety during all of this.  You'll probably want to prep the trays and line them all up in the fridge, then only take them out as needed.  You may want to look into hiring a caterer just to provide some staff to handle this.

  • I did a horse estate wedding with all passed apps--I don't like the look of fruit/cheese displays after they've been mauled by hungry guests.  We did strawberry-brie-almond pops (looked like a cake pop, but was strawberry with the cheese then rolled in almonds), mini caprese skewers, shrimp and grits in tiny little mason jars with a mini spoon, hot brown crostini, and deviled egg halves.  Everything was a hit.  I'd say the thing that was eaten slowest was the strawberry and brie.  I only had a few vegetarian guests, so I didn't have to worry about the whole vegan issue since the non-meat ones had cheese.

Everything could be eaten in one to two bites with one hand, except the shrimp and grits.  This was also important to me.  I hate trying to juggle a drink and a large appetizer, or something messy (wings, even some sliders that are too big...)
