Passport Argh...

So we applied for our Passports at the beginning of August. FI just got his on Friday! Yay! A little concerning to me that mine wasn't right there with his - but oh well. Until I got an e-mail today. Apparently my birth certificate (which I've had since, ya know, BIRTH) wasn't complete for what they needed. Now 39 days before my wedding and 41 days before my honeymoon to Aruba - I'm stuck applying for a new Birth Certificate that is Passport specific so that it will contain the FULL names of my parents - and then sending that to the federal government for my Passport. So I ordered the Birth Certificate the hour after I got said e-mail. And they said it should be processes in 7-10 days, and I paid overnight shipping...but seriously...this is just ARGGHH!!! Edited because words are hard.

Re: Passport Argh...

  • FI needed a passport for work and had tons of problems. He did the rush application but there was a problem with his names matching- I think his middle name was spelled out on naturalization papers but only a first initial somewhere else? Anyway, he sent in new documents and had his passport 3 days later.

    You'll be fine!

  • Something very similar happened to my mom. They didn't accept her birth certificate and had to get a new one. Thankfully her passport arrived right before her trip to Italy.
  • Where do you live?  Some cities have same day service.  You have to be leaving in the next 2 weeks and make an appointment (there is a 800 to make the appointment).  You have to bring your tickets proving you are leaving with you.

Hopefully it will work out, but giving you an a possible option.

  • Oh no!

I just submitted my stuff for my passport, our honeymoon is in mid-November, and they told me that I should be fine.  I  hope they aren't wrong!!

Fingers crossed that your passport comes soon!

  • How are you ladies that are changing your names doing your passports?  I figure I'll just travel on my documents with my maiden name, then work on getting the name change done when we get back from the honeymoon.  FI wanted to wait to go on the honeymoon until we went and got me my military ID, but forget that!  I'm ready for Hawaii!

You MUST apply for your passport in your maiden name. Then, next year when you want to take a first-anniversary trip, you will have to apply for a new passport in your married name.

    It sucks.

I am not legally changing my name until we get back from the honeymoon.

If you have gotten your passport in the past year, it is no charge to get a new passport with your married name.  There is a different form that you fill out, any passport agency (I went to a local library, and they were super helpful!) or the website should help you find the right document.

Mine was complicated.   We took our HM right away.  My passport was to expire 5 months after my wedding.   NBD right?    Yeah, no  South Africa will not let you enter on a passport with less than  6 months left.    Add to that, I lived in the USVI and traveled on my passport on a weekly (some times daily) basis to the British Virgin Islands for work.  I could not just send it  or I would not be able to work.

So 3 months before my wedding I went to the states for my shower, fitting and to go to the same-day passport service in Philly to get a new passport under my maiden name.  You have to make an appointment and be traveling in the next 2 weeks.  They considered the USVI as "foreign" in this case so I got lucky.

As soon as we got home from the HM I quickly got my SS card and sent for a new passport and passport card under my combined name. I expedited the service (i.e. paid like $100 for rushed service).   I was lucky because the boat was  out of the water and I didn't need my passport or card for a month or so.

You can change your name on a passport if it was issued within the last 12 months for free.  If it was issued longer than 12 months you have to pay.

ETA - Hawaii is a state.  You do not need a passport for Hawaii anyway.

  • In all honesty, I wish I didn't change my name. I apparently have lost my birth certificate since I originally applied for a passport, it's been a hassle getting my name changed, I've only finally gotten most of the stuff I need for a new liscense, and I need certified copies of everything ever to get a new passport.

Such a pain in the ass.

  • Oh yeah, I know I don't need my passport for Hawaii!  LOL - that totally made it sound like I thought I needed it in my OP though, ha!    I just meant I wouldn't be waiting for ANY of my documents to change before we go on our trip!  I think part of the time we'll be staying at a military resort, so it would be nice for me to have my military ID at that time, but I'll just have to stick close to him.

I've had my passport under my maiden name since 2007 I think, so NBD....except he may go on a work trip to Australia next June, and if he does, I'm going to move heaven and earth to be able to go over and spend a little bit of time at the end of his trip over there.  Australia's always been a dream, and if I can stay for free in his hotel room, so much the better.

  • Yea I'm pissed because I just got my passport renewed 3 years ago and now to change the name on it I have to renew just like anyone else and pay the $110. So stupid! I did the DMV and all that crap yesterday and the fees are so annoying. But you do need to book honeymoon under your maiden name because there's no way to get your documents changed in time, unless your honeymoon is a few months after the wedding. SSI and passport need to certified marriage license which takes a week after you get married.

  • I got my passport about a month ago and it only took two weeks and one day. Fiance and I's passport both came on the same day. I made sure to give myself a few months after the wedding so that I can change it to my married name.

If you make an appointment with the DEERS office way in advance and have all the right documents, it shouldn't take more than an hour or so to get you in and out with an ID (which is a crappy laminated piece of paper - a corner of unsealed paper sticks out of mine). The actual enrollment takes 15 minutes. The other 45 minutes will probably be spent in the waiting room.

They might do your ID in your married name even if you haven't changed it with the DMV and social security since you've got a marriage certificate in hand. The lady helping us got confused when I made her fix it to be in my maiden name (she automatically put H's last name on there despite the fact that my driver's license and social were in maiden).

Honestly, unless you've got solid insurance now, it's worth thinking about getting into DEERS before you travel just so you're Tricare covered.

  • I think Lynda has mentioned this before, but you could always keep your passport in your maiden name, until it expires or something, even if you changed everything else. You just have to make sure you book any travel with your maiden name.

My sister got married 2 years ago and changed her name on everything but her passport. She went to Canada this year, and brought her passport with her maiden name on it, and it was no problem. I think she also brought her marriage license just in case.

  • What a pain! My birth certificate lists my mother's name incorrectly, like, no a spelling error, but a name she never either legally took or used personally or professionally. Aussie passport powers that be gave zero fucks. I hope everything runs smoothly for you from here on out.

  • Ladies- thank you for all of the support and great advice should things continue to go wrong! I just checked the status of my ordered birth certificate- and it already shipped yesterday! It literally was processed and shipped the day after I requested it! AND I paid for UPS Air - so it should be here today! I'll put it in the mail to the passport folks tomorrow and should have more than enough time to get everything pushed through and returned to me in time! Yay!!!

@manateehugger - I might pick your brain a little bit more on PMs.  I've got great health insurance through my employer, but I know I can be dual-insured by getting on his TriCare policy, but I really don't know much about any of it!

You can be dual-insured, but if you remain on your company's insurance, I believe Tricare can only be your secondary insurance, not primary. Tricare Standard (which you are automatically and instantly enrolled in once you visit the DEERS office) is generally cheaper than most private insurance plans (or even government plans - I'm a federal employee and Tricare isl better than any of the federal employee plans offered to me) and offers good coverage. It's worth exploring! Feel free to PM away.
