Comforter weights?

So I'm thinking of adding a nice comforter to our registry, and I'm not really sure what weight I should get. FI and I live in the south, so it doesn't really get very cold (I grew up in the north so I know what cold is). I think I liked the heft of the medium weight comforter, but I'm worried that it'll be too hot, and that possibly the lightweight one will not be enough for the "winter". I've always had bedsets that came with comforters but FI and I decided on a comforter and duvet cover for the versatility.

Thoughts?

Re: Comforter weights?

  • I registered for a cheaper flannel comforter from BBB and a higher end medium weight one from Macy's for more use across the seasons. I'd go with the slightly heavier weight if you're just going with one. You can always put the heat down or take it off if it's too hot--as opposed to having to gather up the blankets around the house or pay more for heat if it's too cold. Now I'm really tempted to stalk my registry and see whether either have been purchased! But my shower is this weekend and my wedding is in three weeks so I guess I can hold off :)
  • We have a medium weight comforter. I like it in the summer (we're in Atlanta) but FI thinks I'm crazy so we usually don't sleep with it until fall/winter hits. I registered for a lightweight duvet for summertime because I just love the feel of sleeping with a comforter instead of just sheets/light blanket. I think what you did is great! I have a duvet cover so the plan is to just switch out the down comforter seasonally. I also registered for another duvet set so I can have "summer" look and a "winter" look lol.

Pluslaos, even if you don't get it as a wedding or shower gift, I know the down comforters at Macy's go on sale ALL THE TIME for like 50% off. I know I'm definitely buying the one we registered for around Christmas if we don't get it for a gift before the wedding.

  • First, I should preface this with: I always feel warm. Fiance usually feels warm at night. We're in the north....

Anyway, we have a medium weight comforter / duvet cover for fall and winter, and a very pretty quilt for spring/ summer. We really like having both. The quilt gives us the feeling of some weight without the excess warmth of the comforter for those higher temperature months, and having two nice pieces with different patterns satisfies my need to switch things up aesthetically.
