Going to the gym - music

Today I am trying out a gym to see if H and I will like going there. He is not concerned, as he likes gyms. As a very self-aware fat girl, I am super nervous.

To keep myself from worrying that anybody is judging me, I am filling up my ipod with inspirational music. What songs make you feel like a badass when you're working out?

  • I prefer rock when I work out, usually something angry. Vintage Linkin Park is good, or the collaboration they did with Jay-Z. Fall Out Boy (if I'm running), or Rise Against. I'm also the type that listens to whole albums, not one or two songs on a playlist.

"The Pretender" and "Best of You" by Foo Fighters is good. "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons has stopped being overplayed, so I like it again. Ah, and "Centuries" by Fall Out Boy.

I wouldn't worry too much; people at gyms are usually too focused on themselves to notice anyone else, or get super judgey. And if they do, fuck em, you're awesome!

  • Foreigner, AC-DC, Queen, Kiss, Led Zeppelin are what I listen to especially for when I run.

YES.  I love listening to that album while lifting.

I just looked up the playlist I made for my half this past spring....a couple of my favorites that I'll recommend:

    "It's Amazing"--Kanye West
"Rise to Glory"--E.S. Posthumus (it's a Superbowl tribute, so the lyrics are all football related, but god damn it gets me pumped)
    "Remember the Name"--Fort Minor

Also, just a note that NO ONE cares about other people at the gym.  Seriously.  I know it can be super intimidating, but people are either too focused on themselves or they, like me, are too busy trying not to die.  So get on with your bad self!

  • You need 'Brave' and 'I wanna be like me' by Sara Bareilles.

I'm a people watcher, so I do notice people at the gym, but honestly, I silently cheer bigger people on! I applaud people ALL people who are at the gym for taking the steps to be healthy. Just like I don't want someone to roll their eyes because I'm there because I'm in good shape.
  • Latest additions to mine are All About That Bass (Meghan Trainor), Come With Me Now (KONGOS), Bang Bang (Jessie J), and Love Runs Out (One Republic). I also like Shake It (Metro Station), Drop It Low (Ester Dean), Mercy (Duffy), Knock Em Out (Lily Allen), and Sail (awolnation). I prefer upbeat to angry stuff.

  • I like Daft Punk for my elliptical time. "Harder Better Faster Stronger" is probably number one for pushing harder.

  • Nothing specific but I tend to listen to a mix of hard rock and upbeat pop when I work out. Lately I've been listening to Pink. There is something about the song "So What" that makes you run just a bit faster.
  • Gym is evil. It took me 4 tries to stand up this morning. Right thigh hurts like a bitch. Just had to add "bitch" to auto correct dictionary just to properly convey my feels.

  • It sounds dumb, but the songs that work best for me are upbeat songs about being sexy. You know, Buttons by the Pussycat Dolls, lots of Britney, stuff like that. Whenever I think I can't go one more mile, I'm all, "I'M GONNA GET SEXY ABS, DAMMIT!"

  • In all seriousness, I listen to Disney Pandora :)

Same here! They're a great confidence boost when you're feeling jiggly and sweating like a pig.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! Current list looks like this:

    Macklemore - Make the Money
    Muse - Madness
    f(x) - Electric Shock
Yogi ft Pusha T - Burial
    Far - Pony
    NIN - Closer
    Britney - Toxic
    Cobra Starship - Hot Mess
    Kanye - Mercy

Plus some others. Basically, if it makes me feel sexy or badass it's on the list.

  • ...the last time I went walking, I put on Fall Out Boy's Save Rock and Roll album and sort of jazzercised down my neighborhood's main street (over a mile there and back again, so I was proud of my fat self, haha). I put on my sunglasses so "nobody could see me", turned it up all the way, and ignored every single car that drove by. It was a blast.
