Just when I was ready to give up

edited September 2014 in Chit Chat
So I've been pouring a ton of work into an Etsy shop. Making new items, revamping packaging, trying to promote it on social media etc. and for the past few weeks, it's been dead. I've been hearing crickets. I really love making my stuff, and put a lot of effort into it, but I was beginning to consider just shutting it down because my stuff just wasn't selling, no matter what I did. And I'm not exactly rolling in the dough, I don't really have enough money to pay Etsy to use the site when I wasn't making any sales.

But I glanced at my phone today and saw a notification telling me I just sold one of the most expensive items in my shop- it was over a $100 order! (not sure if saying what I sell counts as promoting) I'm super happy, I really needed that bit of encouragement.

  • Go you! I would love to sell on Etsy but I am nervous about it.

You'll definitely hear a bunch of varying opinions on wether or not it's worth it.  It's tough to get stuff noticed on the site, is the biggest struggle people seem to have.  They say as long as you take really great photos of your stuff, describe them REALLY accurately, use your titles/tags wisely, and utilize social media you'll be doing ok.

Of course, you still get some shops with hundreds of sales, and some with none whatsoever, so there is definitely a bit of tweaking and figuring things out to do.  But, it never hurts to try, especially if you make a product you enjoy.  I mean, what I sold today I literally thought wasn't going to sell.  Sometimes just going for it pays off.

  • I had a hard time when I was selling my own things there but once DH started making things in the garage, I threw a couple pictures up on Etsy and BOOM! We've had pretty constant sales since then of his things including a HUGE order to a business this summer.

Keep it up and encourage your sale to leave a review.  The positive reviews really make a difference.
  • Congrats and don't get discouraged!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Congrats!  And also, congrats on the new place!  Moving out of the parents' house is always a BFD.  I remember wondering why you were more quiet around here.  I'm glad it was for such a good reason!

  • That's great! Keep persevering and am sure it'll all be worth it in the end. Rome was't built in a day I guess? :)

  • My coworker ran 2 Etsy shops: one making earrings and pendants, another designing nail polish with her sister.  The jewelry one was closed down because her nail polish business took off.  You send some stuff to a few blogs, get mentioned on twitter and open a booth at a craft show, and the sales just started climbing for her.

If you build it, they will order :)

  • I believe in the TOS here, etc. but I have to say:

  • Yay congrats on your sale and on your new apartment! Funny thing, I was thinking of you last night. I was thinking of some of the members that I had not heard from recently, so I'm glad you are doing well!
