Wine Bottle Centerpieces!

edited September 2014 in Chit Chat
We finished painting wine bottles yesterday!

What do you think? Be brutally honest, as I have plenty of time to improvise. Are they blah…I know they aren't anything super special but any thoughts would be very helpful!! Plus we've been below budget recently so I can purchase more items if need be.

These will be on navy linens.

Re: Wine Bottle Centerpieces!

  • I'm having trouble envisioning the look you're going for. What do your other decor items look like? This could be awesome or horrible, depending on what you want.

  • I would probably mix the sprigs together rather than having a different type in each bottle. Get a little more variation in height within each bottle.

  • I haven't really gotten much, yet, in terms of other decor items. I need help!!! The venue itself has these pretty tea lights strung across the ceiling. It also has BIG wooden tables that can be used at the entrance/for buffet. And so far I have these bird cages for cards.

AH and I forgot! I have this confetti to sprinkle around the wine bottles. I guess I should have included that in the picture with the wine bottles. And then we will have this wire cake topper placed in a two tiered bundt cake (but without the flowers in it)

  • I would spray a matte coat on top of the vases.

I think I might also prefer the branches and greens without the pink stems.  Like lolo said, mix them up a bit.

  • @lolo883 that's actually a really good idea! I hadn't considered doing that!

  • @lurkergirl I ordered the pink knowing I may not like it, just thought it may give it…more dimension or something? lol. I made sure to get plenty of branches and quite a bit of the green casipa as well, so I'm down with that suggestion! Thanks!

  • I feel like the bottles look heavy. Like too solid for the light sprigs coming out of them. Are these clear bottles? Maybe you can create an ombre effect starting with solid gold at bottom and glitter fading up to the clear bottle?
  • @LittlePeachBlossom they are all bottles of various sizes and colors. I had practiced a few with an ombre effect, no glitter. I don't have a picture but they ended up looking kind of….unfinished.

Maybe if I added more sprigs it wouldn't have a "heavy" look, like how lolo said to have one of each in the bottles instead of each bottle being a separate thing.

Ah ok. Yeah it sounds pretty tough to do lol. I like the gold bottles. I think they look nice just a bit unbalanced. I do think lolo's suggestion will help. How about adding lights to the sprigs? A friend did this and it looked so pretty.
  • I really like them! Good job, OP!
  • @LittlePeachblossom We will be having 25 tables of centerpieces. That's a lot of lights lol. Maybe I could find a garland to use, at least that would give some more dimension and some twinkle.

@lc07 I appreciate the compliment :) I'm glad to know they aren't the most drab, awful centerpieces ever created lol

  • You're welcome! I actually really like them a lot. I wouldn't change them.
  • What are your colours?

  • @jynxiie navy blue and gold.

I have a sparkly gold baby's breath (see pic with bird cages, it's in the background) that I could use/order more for centerpieces, unless that would be too much matchy matchy.

  • I like them, I'd just get rid of the pink flowers and switch them for something else that matched your colours a little bit more. I love the middle one though.

  • @jynxiie Thanks :) We got some really awesome wine bottles. That was one FB post I did make- asking for wine bottles from people after holidays (I did not, at the time, imply that they were for wedding related decorations).  I'll see if I either have enough branches vs. green caspia to fill all of the centerpieces or see if I need to purchase something else.  As I said before, my heart wasn't set on having the pink, plus it was cheap, so I won't mind not using it.

Heck, I can put the pink in a gray vintage vase I have in my living room.

  • Is your wedding in the near future? Like fall or winter? Because I am definitely seeing rich mum colors for your bottles, which would contrast nicely with the navy. I also would personally try to go with something that has more volume--I'm thinking like hydrangea volume--to balance out the slender wine bottle. (But then, I don't care for twiggycenterpieces or extremely vertical vases) The greenery is a nice touch too. It's very natural and maybe makes the over-all feel a little more gender-neutral.

Then happy I, that love and am beloved

  • I think the gold will look very good on the navy blue. Are the sprigs/flowers you have in the photos going to be part of the look as well? I might go with something a little more lush maybe?

  • I think the proportions and balance are off, and that's what's making the bottles appear heavy. The arrangements look sparse. Try a fuller arrangement, like this:

  • I'm with @ohannabelle on this one. I like the bottles, but I'm not crazy about the contents.

Can you give more details? Do you have official wedding colors? What season is your wedding? What's the formality?

I'm trying to avoid fake flowers...which is why I've selected what I have shown above. These are all natural/dried. I could go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby and see if there is anything I like, though!

Thanks for all of your suggestions everyone! I'll go this weekend to see what I can find to try to make them "fuller" :) From what I'm reading I'd say consensus says that balance is the biggest issue, and that's easily adjustable!

  • @ElcaB Official wedding colors are navy blue and gold...wedding is November, but was wanting to avoid typical fall colors.

I'm not sure about the formality. It's probably semi-formal? We have traditionally worded wedding invitations, a dinner reception. I would anticipate (but can surely do whatever they'd like) people will be wearing church attire. But, at the same time it's casual...buffet, and beer & wine bar. Formality is hard to define lol.

@birdybride2014, have you thought about adding pine to the mix? It's free (assuming you have a pine tree you can access). Imagine some pine needles combined with the branches in the original pic. You could even add some navy blue in lieu of the red and gold pictured below.

  • @ElcaB That's not a bad idea! It fills, doesn't commit to a season, and still has natural earthy colors that won't clash.

  • I would nix the pink stuff and just do the stick and sprig things (ie. one bottle with a stick thing and two with the green sprigs).

  • Love them OP!

Wow that's a lot of tables! How about adding a solid navy ribbon to one with a sheer gold thinner ribbon on top, and a navy bow to the 2nd bottle, leaving the 3rd bottle plain.

Or spray part of it matte, as suggested by a PP.

    or add some candles.

  • I would get rid of the pink flowers too...Also I would arrange or spread out the contents a little more.  It looks very vertical and a little unnatural to me (unless you were going for that specifically!).  I really like the branches and greenery though!

If it helps, my wedding was also navy blue and gold, but most of our decorations were gold and white.  We also did wine bottle centerpieces with babies breath and some other fake flowers my mom spray painted gold (sounds awful...looked pretty I think). We had a mix of gold and white and not every table looked the same :)
