Tipping Question.

I know the general rule that you don't tip if the person is the owner of the business -- does that also apply to Hair & Makeup? What about for trials?

Some examples for me - H&MU - 2 people.  Hair lady owns the company. she picks from her MUA friends (they are NOT employees - depending on availability) to join her for makeup. I have a separate contract for hair and makeup, even though its all coordinated through the hair lady. Not sure how to work this one.

Photographer -- main guy owns the company. He will bring an assistant, and the assistant will be getting a tip.

Thanks!

I would tip the H & MU like I would any hairdresser I went for a haircut. For me that's 20%. They are providing a personal service and unless they have a contract that says gratuity is included in the contract rate then you should tip. I would never not tip my hairdresser if they owned the salon, I think that suggestion is getting passé.

I would tip the photo assistant that night for sure. Most people suggesting waiting until you get the photos to tip the primary photog.

  • Both my photographer and my MUA owned their own business and I still tipped them. My hairdresser worked my wedding on the side, and I still tipped her.

I would never not tip MUA, hairdressers, nail people etc.
