Woman drops the ring mid-proposal... on the Brooklyn Bridge

Linky to the Buzzfeed story here.

Could you even imagine?! My heart was racing as I read the story.

I think it's so so so important to keep in mind as an NEY-er that proposals don't have to be this moment of grandeur and elaborate shocking surprise. It's really cool when they are, don't get me wrong, but sometimes something we've idealized SO much, whether it be big and flashy, or something small and intimate, can end up going hilariously and horribly wrong. Sometimes it doesn't even come out like we expect it to.

Do you know of any horror proposal stories?

Re: Woman drops the ring mid-proposal... on the Brooklyn Bridge

  • I saw one story where the guy was proposing on a boat and dropped the ring in the water. It was horrifying, there was no way he was going to be able to find it. I'm glad this couple was able to find the ring.

I have to admit when I read these stories I have thoughts like "Oh god, what if BF drops the ring?! I would feel so bad, that would be horrible!" But I know BF and he will probably have the sense to just keep the ring in the box. The lock idea was cute but it seems like a pretty good chance it was going to fall off, it wasn't like a freak accident.

  • Oh my goodness.  H told me he actually thought about proposing on a boat he was going to rent but didn't because he was afraid the ring would go overboard.  :)

No horror stories that I know of with proposals but I almost started yelling at H before he proposed. We had just parked the car and were going to his old apartment and all of a sudden he decided he HAD to go to the bathroom when we were 1/2 block away (what he was really doing was putting the ring back in its box...he couldn't have had the box in his pants pocket during dinner before or he was worried I would notice nor would he leave the ring in the box and in the car during dinner because he was worried it might get stolen).  So...he decided to "go to the bathroom" in the alley.  I was so irritated at him and the fact that he might get arrested that I almost started in on him.  Thankfully, I just smacked him on the arm after the fact and before the proposal and told him he needed to see a doctor about his weak bladder.  :)

  • Oh god, dropping the ring in the water is terrifying! I know one of the OMH's here had her H drop his ring on a board walk (it fell off his finger) while they were on their honeymoon. No way Jose!

@minksat30 - I had a similar reaction! I actually call H an asshole at the end of the video of my proposal because he had lied to me about having to work when I knew his day off was always Mondays. I had called him out on it that morning and he swore up and down that he was going to work. I hit him a couple of times when he walked out of the chapel because I was right and he was a liar. He went and hid behind my dad. Lol.

    Boys and their secrets!

  • Oh my! I'm amazed the police stopped traffic to get it!

  • Boo it's blocked at work I'll have to read it later.

H proposed on our last night in the Bahamas, he was afraid I would lose the ring during the trip with all of the snorkeling we did.

  • DH and I were on a cruise a few years ago.  One of the couples at our dinner table had just gotten engaged on the cruise.  Her ring was not properly sized and was too big.  They were at the beach and she dropped her ring in the ocean.  They recruited a group of people to help scour the sand.

After 2.5 HOURS, a little boy found it right on the waters edge, buried in the sand.  She is SO lucky she got that ring back.

A friend of mine got engaged on the beach in Hawaii and the ring was too big. She didn't have tape so she wrapped a band-aid around the bottom of it to give it a tighter fit so she wouldn't lose it.

That girl is so lucky she found it! It's crazy how that can happen. A friend of my mom lost the diamond from her engagement ring in a corn maze, at night and ended up being able to find it.

  • They were extremely lucky! I would have been so paranoid of having H propose to me somewhere where my ring could have been lost.

We were lucky that we were standing in our hotel suite on carpet where nothing could be lost. I can't imagine what I would have done if I lost it after he proposed.
  • Top Proposal fails

So I have no stories of my own, so I googled, and that youtube video came up.

  • @TwoDimes - I thought someone on here was proposed to on a boat, I just couldn't remember who it was! I would be super worried about dropping the ring if BF proposed on/near water.
