Calming Thoughts

How do you prevent your mind from racing at night? Every night this week, as soon as my head hits the pillow, my brain is flooded with wedding thoughts. Not super stressful, but just imagining the day and how it will go and the logistics of everything. How do you push that out?

  • Ativan ;)

I try to listen to something. We have a fan that runs and I focus on that sound.

I really do take Ativan though!

    Xanax.

Seriously, that's my only suggestion. I'm not much help.
  • Xanax and prayers
  • I read. And sometimes take Benadryl. Or melatonin.

  • Progressive muscle relaxation. Basically you listen to a recording that guides you through a process of tensing and relaxing each part of your body and then focusing on the feelings of relaxation. I like it because it gives my mind something to focus on instead of the racing thoughts - I usually drift off within the first 10 minutes or so. There are lots of PMR recordings available online.

If my mind is really going over time, I will write everything down or journal so that I can get it all out of my head. A lot of times, I need to remember things or am worried about something in the future so putting in paper helps me feel more relaxed to deal it with it in the morning. ETA: So, I just reread your post and looked at your countdown- no wonder you can't sleep woman, you've got 3 DAYS left!! That's freaking awesome- no wonder you can't sleep! No worries- hopefully you'll get some rest once you get married. :) Edited again- okay so no paragraphs grr

  • Typically I read, watch tv, or listen to music.  But, I also tend to wake up at 3am with stress and can't shut my brain down.  Then I usually go lay on the couch and turn on some stupid rerun show that I've already seen that I don't need to concentrate on and that usually distracts my brain enough to fall back asleep. But, it has to be something that I really don't care if I watch.  If it's a movie, I get interested and want to stay awake. It's usually Friends or something like that.

Lately, I've learned the joys of medicated help. A while back my doc gave me some muscle relaxers (Baclofen) for back pain/spasms.  They didn't really help the pain a whole lot.  But, man, do they knock me out at night.  When I take them I sleep like the dead and nothing can keep me up or is waking me up.  And when the pill says it's time to sleep, I can't even fight it.  Last night I took one.  I was in bed shortly before DH and I remember being tired and consciously thinking I needed to stay awake until he comes to bed to say goodnight.  Next thing I know, it's morning and my light is still on next to my bed. DH didn't know how to turn it off (its built into my alarm clock, so lots of buttons) and didn't want to wake me, even though he was worried that the light would prevent him from waking up on time (he doesn't need an alarm clock, his internal alarm is super accurate).  And I know he has a hard time falling asleep with any light on, so I felt really bad. He should have just woken me, if he could, because that awesome pill would have knocked me right back out, but he didn't want to risk it.

  • I have a cup of honey ginger tea with freah lemon and a dash of American Honey to put me to sleep. I have a terrible time with insomnia and meds just make me a walking zombie.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation + white noise (for me, usually ocean waves).

  • Zzquil was the only way I slept from about 2 weeks before until just after the wedding. My life saver!
  • Square breathing. Google with images.
  • Sometimes I'll sing a really slow song in my head. A good one is The Jets "Make it Real."

There's also an epic e-book of Dr. Seuss "The Sleep Book" that I've never made all the way through. Once they get to "everyone was yawning. Yaaaawwwwwwn" I'm out like a light.

  • I'm so glad that I'm not the only one here who said meds.i was worried for a second that they were my first thought. My muscle relaxers usually knock me out, but of its really bad insomnia I grab my seroquel...but only if I can sleep for 12 hours so usually weekends.

The one thing I've learned with my years of insomnia is TV is a bad idea if its something you want to see.

Warning TMI-Oddly enough I've discovered that grabbing my vibrator and not turning it on until I have concocted an elaborate fantasy gets me down. By the time I put that much energy into thinking I have no energy left to turn it on and pass out. It's hard to think about your stressors when you have dirty thoughts racing through your brain!
