I'm taking the plunge on renting from Rent the Runway.  I've somewhat narrowed it down.  Event is a formal party basically, in middle of November.

I know which one I'm leaning towards.  I'm an hourglass shape, plus size.

  • rolling in the glitz

  • Rush of Gold or rolling in the glitz
  • I'm leaning towards Rolling in the Glitz and Goldify Yourself.

Rolling in the Glitz is gorgeous; I'm hesitant b/c that cut either looks really great or really bad on me.  Also, I'm cautious of the color.  The reviews say it's rose gold more than gold.  I can pull off dark golds, but the lighter they get, the worse it will look on me.  I don't think I've ever worn a rose gold and don't know how it'll look.  There are some pics that make me think okay, just still not sure.

I know the Goldify Yourself will look good with body type and colors.  The pics others have taken make me confident of that.

I do like that Rush of Gold b/c of the neckline.  The pictures make me a little hesitant b/c the top looks great...not sure about the bottom half though.

This, or Encore.  But I feel like I would like Encore better in another color.  But if red is your color, problem solved.
  • Ooh, depends on what you're aiming for.

Red carpet sophicated show stopper, or you are a VIP and want it known, the red.

I like either of the Valvos, the long a little more than the short. The have a little more of an accessible va-va-voom and fun to them. Good late fall color.

The Slate and Willow doodled one looks really cute if you need some dazzle and don't want to put up with any formal dress hijinks whatsoever.

The Monique, igigi, the black S+W and BM seem like snoozers.

The gold BM...pretty, but how shall I put this...that looks like the dress that designers hound specific starlets to wear at a high profile event and it's promptly returned. If you are not that starlet, it looks more like you just broke into the designer's car and stole it. It looks too egregious excess and privilege. You wear it to prove that you are able to procure BM. Or maybe it's a "dress wears you" sort of thing.

  • Goldify yourself.  I thought rolling in the glitz, but I have that same issue the cut can be awesome or truly horrifying.

If you like your legs, the mirage would be my top pick

  • Dude, the dresses have names? Dharma = obtuse :-/

  • I like Encore and Chrysler at Night.  I like the long gold but the event would need to be really fancy I think.
  • I really love the Encore and I look great in red.  I'm just worried about the cut, for the same reason as the Rolling in the Glitz.  It all depends on how that bottom part falls on my midsection if it looks good or bad.  But the full skirt  just love love love love.  And really, the midsection is my own issue, DH always poo-poohs me on it and tells me that he can only notice if he's really really really looking and no one else is looking at me like that.

I also kind of like the Slate and Willows (Mirage and Quinn) just b/c they're fun and flirty and, like 6 mentioned, I do like my legs. While it's a formal event, it's not a black tie or anything, more like, well...a prom really.  So, there'll be a wide array of "formal" there.  Ican see the Quinn with some awesome tights and shoes and the Mirage with just a nude hosiery and great heels.

So, you guys seems to be agreeing with my "these boring and safe" choices, and my "I actually really like" choices and can't decide choices.  :)
  • Slate and Willow!!!!
  • Sometimes they do promotions for getting an second different dress for a discount.

I like Encore, Chrysler and Rolling (in that order.)
I don't really like Goldify.  Although, it looks better in the pictures of "real" people than it does on the model.
  • I like Goldify, but IMO, it needs something for a color "pop"...   Mirage just doesn't do it for me - It's one of those patterns that is more difficult to pull off.  Goldify says more "showstopper", whereas Mirage is more wedding-guest type.  Above all else, choose the one that will make YOU feel like a show stopper when you put it on!!!
  • i think rolling in the glitz could look amaze, especially if you are hourglass. the women who look a little ... off are not as hourglass, or they could have used a little tailoring in the shoulder straps.
goldify is a safer choice, though.

also, everyone needs to stop slouching.

i do think you should just go with bold earrings and no other jewelry. in a dress as bold as either of those, you need to keep it simple or it starts to look a little draggy.

  • I love Rolling in The Glitz. With simple shoes and jewelry, I feel like that would be a show stopper.

  • Yes, I had another friend looking at some pictures and one of them, she just said, That's not the picture I would've chosen for myself.

DH liked the longer one better, so I think my decision is this (plus the sizing looks like a better fit):  http://www.renttherunway.com/shortlist/542dbb3a0cf2d98bb480a449?nav_location=icon&action=share_shortlist&object_type=shortlist

I know it's dumb to rent the earrings (and I'll be cleaning them) but really a nice pair of chandeliers can be expensive (more than $10) and I don't have anywhere else to wear them.  I also won't have to buy new shoes, b/c I have a basic black pump that'll work with these and a great gold clutch.  I'm going to do my final measurements tonight and make sure I pick the right sizes.  I won't do any other jewelry.
  • the oscar de la renta earrings are faaaaab.

  • I'm leaning towards those b/c I really like the look of wrapped wire and length.  I like the Kate Spades, but the reviews seem to be so-so re: the actual look.  They're both similar in shape, the Spades are a bit smaller in length.
  • The Oscar earring!  I can't wait to see pics.  Hair? Makeup?
  • Well, I'm due for a haircut and I'm not sure what I"m going to do.  I'm tired of my asymmetrical look and I've grown it out enough to fix that up.    I'll do my own makeup, but it'll be a nice evening look.  I've got a great Naked palette and some other additional golds and browns to use.  I might go for a red lip for a pop of color.
