Fave fall activities?

I currently live in an area where we have summer-type weather until mid-November and then it becomes winter until mid-March.
I guess it could be considered a 2-season climate.
I grew up, however, in an area that is very fall-friendly.
This makes me insanely jealous of all the colored leaves and pumpkin patches that seem to be invading my Facebook mini-feed lately.

Here, I am trying to get in the spirit by making a homemade pumpkin pie (even though its approx 85 degrees outside), which, while simultanesouly watching Hocus Pocus, was always my inauguration to the fall activity. The smell of the baking pie is so cozy and well, Hocus Pocus, 'nuff said.

What are your fave fall activities? What gets your cosy autumn spirit going?

  • I love picking out pumpkins and having warm apple cider! I also love getting fall scented candles! I LOVE ALL THINGS FALL!!

  • @birdybird2014 I went to Starbucks for lunch and where I am they don't have pumpkin flavored anything! *sips on her tall iced Americano*

  • Apple picking in the fall was our family tradition growing up. Haven't done it since high school and we're too busy with wedding stuff on weekends to do it this year, but maybe next fall i can convince FI (then DH!) that we need fresh apples for pie... and sauce... and cider... and just about everything. Apples belong in everything fall.

  • Apple picking in the North Georgia mountains and baking ALL THE THINGS. Have y'all tried the Trader Joe's pumpkin bread mix? My mother would turn in her grave if she knew I made pumpkin bread from a box, but damn it is good.

I think FI discovered a new favorite fall thing for us: apple pie flavored moonshine. It's pretty amazing.

  • Apple and pear cider. Warm quilt to sleep at night. Spice cookies (I hate spice and sugar together), I make them for FI and the smell doesn't bother me as much as the taste. Pumpkin soup and roasted fall veggies in general. Don't know how close to apple picking I can get here in the middle of London, but apple pies, sans cinnamon, are my favourite come fall.

  • Fall is my favorite.

We love tailgating & watching football. Hiking. Cider beer & pumpkin ale. Apple everything. Bonfires. Hocus Pocus. Sweaters & cozy pajamas. Soup. Lots and lots of soup. Hot chocolate.

    Those both sound amazing!

But...I just tried pumpkin spice greek yogurt and it was not amazing at all. There are some places that pumpkin just doesn't belong.

Pumpkin risotto sounds great since it's so good in pasta too! Do you just mix squashed pumpkin with stock or do you use pumpkin soup out of a box/can for the risotto? @blabla89 They seem to want to make everything pumpkin the month of October and sometimes the combination out there are...not so tasty.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/03/pumpkin-spice-food_n_1933517.html

  • Blankets. All the blankets. I did an inventory before I moved all my crap home in July - I have fifteen. At some point they usually all go on my bed.

Of course, I'm marrying a heater, so the need for blankets has recently dropped significantly. I mean, I still need them when he's working, but once we go to bed we both end up attempting to escape the comforter because it's so hot.

This. You can remove the pumpkin as you want (I tend to "steam" it in a shallow bath of water until the skin come off). Then you can cube up / smash the pumpkin and use it as any other type of "risotto" ingredient, like mushrooms, asparagas etc.

I suppose that you could use a pumpkin type soup for the flavor, but I think the texture you would get from fresh pumpkin would be nicer (this may be a personal preference though).

  • I love picking out pumpkins and decorating the house for Halloween and Thanksgiving. Fall always has the best seasonal beers. And the weather is perfect for bonfires.

  • My mom tried to make pumpkin pie once using real pumpkins and everything from scratch.  It turned out terrible.  I guess she didn't know that you are supposed to buy certain pumpkins to bake with instead of any old pumpkin.  We had people over than night from our church too, and they were eating it saying "oh yum" and that sort of thing, too nice to not eat the thing.
Anyways, I always carve a pumpkin and I like to do so.  I love watching horror movies in general so I watch more during October to get me ready for Halloween.  Also, I
love going out after a holiday and buying candy and chocolate on ridiculous sales and pigging out.  That's festive, right? :P

  • Me and FI are planning to go for a walk in OZ park this Friday, specifically to see the changing leaves and enjoy the brisk fall weather we're having.

I make cinnamon swirl bread from scratch throughout the fall and winter holidays. It always makes our place smell fantastic.

Sweaters and scarves and blankets and cuddling on the couch with hot tea are all things that gete excited about fall.

  • Oh yes, my birthday too! October 30th :)

  • I love fall! SO and I are going to the corn maze on Wednesday which is one of my favorite fall activities. We are also really big into carving pumpkins and we're doing that in a couple of weeks. I also love that the weather gets cooler and I can wear sweaters and hats and scarves!

  • I'm a ba-humbug who cannot enjoy anything fall related because all I can think is "winter is coming, I hate winter, snow is coming, I hate snow". So I despise fall for being the precursor to my hell that is winter. As for sweaters, I wear them year round because offices insist on blasting fucking A/C all summer.

  • So going to take FI to a corn maze next week!  :)  And I'm so looking forward to some pumpkin pie goodness, bonfires (seriously - the only time I like hotdogs!) and s'mores, apple cider, popcorn balls, and all those yummy things!

  • Spoon River Drive!  All the towns in Spoon River Valley in Illinois set up tons of crafts, food, etc, and we always spend a day driving around and hitting a bunch of different towns to enjoy the fall weather and buy some new holiday or seasonal decorations.
  • Like OP, I live somewhere where fall doesn't really exist. I am, however, looking forward to cooler temperatures and being able to run/cycle outdoors without having to get up at 5:00 am. I am a tad jealous of people who get the full 4 seasons, especially a real fall, but ask me again when it's late November and I'm at the pool.
