How much Tulle is too much? My dress is lace and tulle, but I can't decide on BM dresses...

For the bridal party,  I have decided to go with either shades of blue (or possibly purple) so each BM can pick a shade that suits her best, but am stuck on fabric.  The Watters Farah gown I will wear is fairly streamline with a lace under-layer, and tulle over-layer. Our wedding is outdoor in late March in Austin, TX, and I'm sold on floor-length dresses. The groomsmen will likely be in suits, rather than tuxes, and we have a woodland theme.

My main concerns are:

1) Would it be too much tulle if all the BMs are in tulle dresses if my dress has tulle (+a long veil)?
2) Will my BMs hate the fabric and be uncomfortable?
3) Is the Jenny Yoo Annabelle tulle dress even worth the price ($260+)?

I just want everyone to look nice and the dresses to all go together, but I have six ladies, and want to have 2-3 options so that each can pick something that suits their style.  Everyone I have asked just tells me that I can pick whatever I want, but that isn't the issue! I was pretty much sold on the floor length Jenny Yoo convertible tulle dress, "The Annabelle" (Nordstrom and BHLDN),  because it comes in several shades of blue and purple. But when two of my BMs tried it on, they didn't seem fond of the tulle, which made me realize it probably isn't' the most practical fabric in the world.

Thoughts? Does any one have experience with the Annabelle dress or tulle BM dresses? Should I play it safe and go with chiffon instead? I feel totally lost every time I sit down and try to decide... ANY HELP OR ADVICE IS APPRECIATED.

  • Your dress is gorgeous!

If your BMs are not thrilled with the tulle, I'd go for something else, personally.
  • First, there is no such thing has too much tulle! (said the bride who worn the biggest dress I could find, made enitrely of tulle) YOu want to see tulle, check out Lazaro's dresses.

Second, The annabelle dress doesnt even look like tulle to me. more like chiffon. If you like that style dress have you looked at Amsale? They are similar and might give you a few more options.

    Third, your dress is beautiful.

  • Your dress is gorgeous and the BM dress you are considering is very pretty.  Since your BMs are not found of it, though, I would probably nix it.  Was it just because they didn't find the material to be comfortable?  Or did they dislike the style or something else?
Regarding the "is it worth it" question, have you asked your BMs in private what their budgets are?  Once you do, you should pick dresses only within the lowest price point.  Or, you could just tell them to keep to a certain colour or colour palette, length, and/or material and let them pick out and buy their own dresses.

  • Do you know the budgets for your BMs?
Have they been able to try on this dress? Only allowing one style may not work with every single body type.  Also, they cannot tell if the dress is comfortable until they try it on.

  • Your dress is gorgeous and looks like it will perfectly suit a spring outdoor wedding with a woodland theme! It looks amazing on you.  I think the Jenny Yoo Annabelle dress would go very well with yours. That said, if your bridesmaids don't like it, maybe it's not the right dress. I recently wore an Aria bridesmaid dress and although mine wasn't soft and flowy, they do offer quite a few styles in silk georgette which comes in a fairly wide variety of colors (including blues and purples).
  • Sorry I don't have advice in terms of bridesmaids, really just wanted to say that your dress is so different and absolutely beautiful.

  • Your dress is really pretty...that said, have you asked each of your bridesmaids their dress budgets in private?  This is the first step in finding their dress.  Second, if you like the mis-match idea, why not just have them find a floor length dress of their choosing??  If you are worried about it being too all over the map, you can ask them to get chiffon fabric (not shiny like satin/silk/taffeta) and call it a day.

For our wedding, we asked the girls to get the same color and approximate length but let them choose a style within their comfort range and price range.  All four girls picked a different dress and it was beautiful!!!!

  • That dress is just stunning and you look so happy in it!

    1) No - I do not think it's too much to wear a tulle veil. It looks lovely in the photo.

    2) Have you asked each of your BMs *privately* for their dress budget? Keep in mind alteration and shipping costs. These need to be included in the overall budget. I question this because $260+ and then alterations, shipping, etc. on top of that seems very high for a BM dress. I'd be VERY surprised if the lowest budget of all your BMs is over $300.

    3) Personally, I hate wearing tulle. I have really sensitive skin and it bothers me. If I wear tulle, I'm a red, blotchy mess.

  • OP -- First of all, your wedding dress is beautiful!

I think it would look nice for your BMs to have something tulle-esque on. To me, and I know I am not a fashion expert, chiffon has a similar look and might be more comfortable for people to wear and is also a very common BM fabric. I find that on my body it is more forgiving than a lot of other potential BM dress fabrics.

On the Anabelle dress -- I tried it on in Ivory as a potential wedding dress. I felt like the construction was not wedding dress level -- I didn't want to see the skirt so much, but I think in any color other than the Ivory and as a BM dress, it would be great. I think the Lapis Blue or Soft Plum would both look awesome. An added bonus is that the dress has extra flap things that you can use to change the look a bit -- make it a halter, one shoulder, etc. I also think the Juliette dress is lovely, and has a bit more going on up top: http://www.bhldn.com/bridal-party-guests-view-all-dresses/juliette-dress-cashmere/productoptionids/fbcaeb8b-b90b-4e9a-9313-32da085940dd

I would check with your BM's on their budget though and go from there.
