Any concern regarding flooding?

Hi all, my FI and I will be spending a few days in New Orleans on our honeymoon next month and I was just wondering if any locals have thoughts as to whether or not all this flooding along the Mississippi could become an issue with travel or access to parts of the city?

Well, I live in New Orleans and I can tell you that people are not happy about it!  I do not think you should have much trouble with travel since you will be coming next month.  You will probably be in the French Quarter most of the time, so I am sure you will be fine.  If you want to learn more about what is happening and what areas may be affected, try going to nola.com and looking up the news on it.  We don't have too much info regarding when they are doing this.  Good luck and I hope ya'll come down!  It's a wonderful place to experience!

Yikes, found an article on nola.com showing the status of the water.  It's at 18.5 feet as of the 10th, NOLA's levee is good to 20 feet.  I really hope everything works out with the opening of the new floodway, etc.

I am officially freaked about the flooding...but my wedding is in 2 weeks and I live one block from the river!

For a vacation that isn't until next month, I think you will be okay.  If they open the spillway soon, we should have only a minimal amount of flooding, if any at all.  If they don't, then I guess it's anybody's guess.  I'd be more concerned about coming next week than next month though...

I am engaged to a civil engineer who has a good understanding of this.  Especially by next month, the river level will be going down after it crests about a week from now, and you will be fine.  The Corps of Engineers has a river gauge immediately outside their offices and they are monitoring everything closely and opening spillways and will not allow the city to flood, so there is nothing to be freaked out about :-)  In fact, with the river being high, it will be more dramatic and an enjoyable sight to see.  Come on down to NOLA and I hope you guys have a fabulous time on your honeymoon!
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
