Dallas & Forth Worth Area Knotties

So H & I will be stuck at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport for over 5 hours for a layover.  I was thinking of renting a car and going somewhere during that time.  Any ideas?

I was googling last night and some postings on trip advisor suggested going to Hard 8 BBQ or Smokehouse BBQ.  H really loves BBQ, so I was thinking about going to one of those.  But H also really loves steak, so are there any good steakhouses? 

I know the airport is in between the two cities and they are a good distance from the airport.  But if there are any cool little towns close to the airport, I think that would work best for us.  We would still need to go back through security and all that after we drop the rental car back off.

    Read this and was like AHHH this is me!

    I was hoping to have a get together but I can try to offer ideas for you. Hard 8 BBQ is very very good, I know there's one by me in Coppell. You'll have to Google for anything closer. Anything north of DFW airport is suburb land, I suggest Southlake Town Square (food, shopping, movies) and it's cute to walk around. Shouldn't be too long of a drive from the airport.

    I'm not familiar with anything south of the airport, sorry.

    Also Chuys is some damn good Mexican food :)

    I'm asking DH right bow about steakhouses. We always go to Saltgrass Steak House in grapevine, but it's a chain restaurant.

    Wish I was there right now! I won't be in town (and just for a visit then) until December. Since I haven't officially moved there yet, I have no recs. I'm going to be spending my trip in December looking around and trying to figure out where we want to live.

    By meeeeee! Jk. But I'm here, McKinney and Sachse are two suburbs that have a ton of new development. East side of the metroplex.

    We'll be looking in actual Fort Worth proper. Our office is on the far west side of the city and I refuse to commute more than 15-20 minutes. LOL But, the good news, is that I hope to be there soon!!!

    I lived in Dallas for 5 years post-HS/during college, but I'm of little help as I've blocked the entire time frame from my memory because I hated Texas so much ;) . I do know there's a shit ton of restaurants, though, so I'm sure you'll find something yummy.

    Thanks for the comments all! I think Hard 8 it will be. I would very much do the Mexican place but H doesn't like Mexican food because he thinks its "spicy". Doesn't matter that I've tried to explain that not all Mexican food is spicy.

    I also saw something for the town of Grapevine. Anyone been there?

    ETA: Saw something for Grapevine on TripAdvisor. Just saw that sugargirl mentioned it also. What's it like?

    Best barbeque in Dallas is Pecan Lodge! It's in Deep Ellum which is right next to downtown Dallas. It's a bit of a hike, but man is it worth it. You could definitely make it in that amount of time and you would get to see the city and a really cool area. Closer to the airport, I would recommend North Main BBQ in Euless, but it's not open every day. It's all you can eat and I loved it. It's really far from me (more than 10 minutes) so I've only been once, but I really enjoyed it. I don't really have any places I could recommend for steak as I hate places like Texas Roadhouse (that place is from Michigan. Get out of Texas with that nonsense) and other chain places. +1 on Chuys, started in Austin, which has the greatest jalapeno ranch dip I have ever experienced. Just to clarify though, I live a mile outside of uptown Dallas and really don't travel more than like 7 miles from home except for clients because I hate suburbs....

    Hmm grapevine has The Gaylord Texan which is a huge all inclusive resort with a river walk inside. I don't recommend going there for the time you have though. Also Great Wolf Lodge - hotel with its own indoor water park. Also not for your time frame. Grapevine is right next to Southlake, so you could easily go from one to the other. Seriously, they are separated by a highway. Cross over and you're in the other.

    I work in Grapevine. But I don't think it really has many attractions other than the resorts.

    Definitely stick close to the airport and immediately surrounding areas. I highly doubt you could get to Deep Ellum, get through the hour line at Pecan Lodge and back in time. Don't eat at the steakhouse in Gaylord, it's terrible. And actually there are some good Texas based chains inside the airport, Pappadeaux and Pappacitos. You can get to Fuzzy's tacos and if you do go outside the airport definitely head north, not south.

    Instead of renting a car, try Uber, you can get past the no airport thing by booking a pickup location close to the airport then directly texting your driver.

    ETA - @Sugargirl1019 If you're serious about it,I would love a DFW meetup! We can maybe even give @Jells2dot0 a proper Texas welcome when she gets here!
