Wedding Party

My sister/MOH and her yellow shoes!

This is just a funny story I thought I'd share. I'll start with a bit of context so you can see how the yellow shoes really don't fit with the theme...

My fiance and I are getting married during an evening winter ceremony. The ceremony site is a room in an old hotel. The walls are made of stone, the floors are made of old hardwood. It will be dark, and there will be many candles in the ceremony room. It's a very intimate, romantic wedding. Our decor is mainly candles in mercury style votives, old bronze-coloured vases, and earthy flowers in ivory, dark green, and berry tones. I've tried to keep it as simple as possible (and in keeping with our romantic evening wedding) for my bridesmaids by asking them to wear any black cocktail dress and black shoes. Well, my sister, who is one of my best friends, called me yesterday to tell me that she had found her dress (it's gorgeous!) and her dream shoes! It turns out, the shoes are mustard yellow. Yep. Mustard yellow. There is no yellow anywhere in this wedding.

I didn't really know how to react when she told me. She noticed that I wasn't very enthusiastic about her shoes on the phone, but I figured I'd think about it before telling her I really didn't like the idea (though my initial reaction was just to start laughing at how ridiculous it was).

She ended up telling my mom about her yellow shoes, who told her in no uncertain terms that these do not fit with the wedding theme (I hadn't told my mom about the shoes). After their talk, my sister told me that she won't wear them for the pictures and ceremony, but she may change into them later in the evening. :)

This whole situation is just so funny… Black cocktail dresses and black pumps were just too simple for my wonderfully artistic and eccentric sister… I think we'll end up with a picture of her in them just for fun!

Re: My sister/MOH and her yellow shoes!

  • I am so glad you have your head on straight about this! Some brides would go batshit, and there is no need.

Your sister is agreeing not to wear them for pictures, and that is all that matters.

The yellow shoes are probably ultra-comfortable for a long day, and she will wear them again.

    Good for both of you!

  • Ditto PP. Good job being reasonable! I bet those shoes are going to look really cute with a black dress though!
    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • Maybe rethink the black shoes and have everyone wear yellow? haha Kidding... cute story!  Your sister sounds like a fun person to be around!

  • Aww...you and your sister sound like you have a great relationship!

I'm glad that you didn't get thrown off by the color of the shoes. It's good of her to honor your request for the black shoes in pictures/ceremony (which I think is reasonable since you're letting them chose any type of dress and shoe in one of the most common colors).

If I'm being perfectly honest, even in my super color-coordinated mind, I actually don't see the yellow shoes as a big deal. As the MOH it might even be a nice way for her to stand out on the dance floor.

In the end, I'm sure it'll be something you both smile about when reflecting back on the day. :)

You read my mind!!! I actually have worn a LBD with Yellow shoes before and everyone loved the look!!!!

I would tell her to wear them personally...but that is obviously a biased opinion :p

  • When my sister/MOH first sent me the picture of the shoes she wanted to get for my wedding, I honestly thought she was joking.  They were some of the ugliest shoes I've ever seen in my life.  So I enthusiastically responded "Oh yes, they're perfect!" knowing she would get the joke back.  Except she was serious.  Thankfully she never asked me my opinion on them again, so I didn't have to lie.  It certainly didn't affect the wedding day or anything, buy it sure does make me question her taste!

    Love it!
