Need some advice! Uncovered florescent lights & 8-9ft ceiling Challenge!

Hi Knotties!

I need some help!! Just some brainstorming!

The venue I think we are picking has low ceilings and florescent lights that are uncovered.
I do not want to draw attention to the ceiling nor cover the whole thing. I know people rarely look at the ceiling but I would like to hide those awful tube lighting for pictures and the chance they will look up.

Any ideas?

  • You can drape the ceiling I guess but that would bring more attention to the ceiling. If you keep the lights off and do uplighting on the walls, it would take the attention off of the ceiling and bring them to the walls instead, I think, and the darkened room should make the tube lights blend into the background or may even hide them completely in photos (depending on what equipment your photographer is using).

  • Would it look crazy putting a string of twinkle lights down the rows of the florescent lights?  Keep the florescent lights off.  If it looks rough I guess I can cover it with sheer fabric of some sort.

    Thoughts?
  • I like the idea of keeping the lights off and using a combination of uplighting and candles. I HATE fluorescent lights with the passion of 1000 fiery suns, so I wouldn't even allow them to be on.

You can rent uplighting from most party supply stores; it's probably cheaper than hiring a company to come set it up. Just make sure you give them the ceiling height so they know how big the unit needs to be. (Smaller units won't project all the way up the wall.)

We rented uplighting for our hotel suite (we had a reception in a big suite in Vegas), and I think we paid around $50 for eight lights? They were super easy to use. We just plugged them in and put them where they looked best.

Plus, I think uplighting + candles makes things look fancy. :)
