Job searching is a full time second job. . .

I have worked at a grocery store now for almost nine years and currently work at the service desk. I also work for my dad whenever he calls me and I am available. Lately it seems like all I do is wake up . . search for jobs. . . get ready for bed . . . search for jobs. I am happy that I am at least getting interest from prospective employers now. I have had a few interviews, a few calls to come in and fill out applications, and just took the Post Office 473 Exam today and passed it.

Now that I am a college graduate I am so ready to move onto some form of full time job, so that I can set a plan to go back to school. I can't wait to make a livable wage and actually help my Fiance with some of our expenses a little more . . .

  • Job searching is the worst! I took an unpaid internship right after graduating with my masters so I at least felt like I was doing more than just filling out a million job applications.

  • I just went through the fresh out of college search and I hear you. It can be so discouraging and I really don't have any advice. I still only have a part time job, but it's at least a job I was aiming for.

Same here. I settled for a part-time job doing exactly what I want over a full-time job that wasn't what I wanted. So far I don't regret it!

  • Giiiiirl, I feel ya.  Why do think I have so much time to knot? ;)

I would totally take a part-time job but the problem is, is that my current part-time job is loaded with benefits. I have health and dental insurance, 3 weeks paid vacation, and even a 401K. I make more than minimum wage and time and a half on Sundays. I have worked there since I was 16 years old, and am now 25. I am just so miserable there, and have a hard time forcing a smile these days. I know my job in and out and it is incredibly boring. I am ready for something new. I refuse to apply for anything other than full time jobs now because benefits are hard to come by. I want to at least be making enough that if I loose my benefits I can pick up a low cost health insurance.

Today alone I went in and applied at a chiropractors office for a full time Front Desk position and drove three hours total to Illinois for that Post Office Exam. I am now nervous that if I get a job that I want that they won't be willing to work around my wedding in May. We are getting married in Jamaica and will be there for a full week. I am wondering if I don't find a job within the next two months or so if I should postpone the search until after the wedding.

FI started a full time job about 3-4 weeks ago. He told them outright that he would need 1 day off for his bachelor party, 2 off for our wedding, and 10 days for our honeymoon. Even with all of that, they still hired him, so I wouldn't let that discourage your search.
  • I guess I should just keep doing what I am doing in full force. So many people have that "at least you have a job philosophy." Which I suppose is true. I can't believe I have spent almost nine years of my life working at this place. I just can't wait to move on.

Yep.  I would kill for a boring part-time job with benefits.  I have also been in a job I hated, so I can see both sides.

On a side note, I am getting married May 16, and we are honeymooning in Jamaica!!  Maybe we'll see you there ;)

@lurkergirl . . . My part-time job with benefits is trapping me. Of course I am grandfathered under the awesome contract I have, so new employees can never get my benefits. No other part-time job that I actually enjoy will ever be worth it. Where are you honeymooning in Jamaica? We are staying at the Sandals Grande Riviera in Jamaica! I cannot wait!

Seriously?!  We haven't booked yet, but this is our plan!  Just watching flight prices now :)

Regarding the benefits: I don't think you'll ever find benefits like that again.  I have had exactly one job that offered any benefits.  I totally understand what you mean about feeling trapped.

I got laid off from that job 3 years ago, and decided to sort of start over.  I went back to school, got a new degree, and....I tutor kids after school now.  I tried to convince myself I was okay with it and would dive into my inner domestic goddessness, but in reality I am bored to tears and having a really difficult time finding a job.  Going back to school was great, but on paper I'm a 29 year old who hasn't worked in 3 years.  It fucking blows.

Sorry for the awkward threadjack vent :/

That is awesome! We are arriving there on the 12th and leaving on the 19th. We get married on the 15th. My dad was awesome and bought us flights as a weeding gift. From Chicago it ended up costing about $1050 for two people so it really was not bad.
Haha its okay. I applied at a smoke shop and took an interview there about a week ago. The manager really wanted me and basically offered me a full time job right then and there with no benefits because it would be so hard to work around my schedule. They did two week schedules and mine is done weekly so it would be too hard to work around. I said no. I did not really feel like putting "Cigarette Outlet" on my resume when looking for full time Administrative Assistant/Front Desk/Anything Professional positions. It was hard enough making my current job sound good. . . . I had paragraphs. . . They are now gone.

That's good to know.  Our HM is a gift, but we still want to keep it reasonable, KWIM?

That is so funny about the smoke shop.  Is it one that also sells sex stuff?  Here they're all "tobacco" supplies and vibrators.  It's entertaining, but not something I need on my resume...might look odd next to the early childhood education degree, haha!

  • No, but they sell a lot of different tobacco pipes, water pipes . . . and hookah. I was actually pretty excited about it because I thought it would be an entertaining second job. But no the scheduling had to conflict. . .  If they sold any form of sex toys I am not sure I would be able to tell my father where I worked. Haha.
