  I think your first instinct was the best idea.  Find a paint chip at the store or a ribbon, etc, that matches your ideal BM dress.  Give each BM a piece of the color and tell them to buy a dress that matches closely to it.  Give more direction such as knee length and possibly fabric choice as well.  If your MOH questions it, just say with an international BM, this is the easiest route to go.  If your MOH really wants your approval on the dress, arrange to go shopping with her.

  This is what I would too!

  Also, I had a BM like this, so I just went with her as she looked at dresses.  I honestly didn't care which dress she picked as long as she was happy/comfortable with it

  Is she British? In Britain the bride buys the BM's dresses, so she may be surprised if she is asked to fly in AND buy a dress. 

  
  

  As for designers and shipping, I was in an American wedding and got the dress at JCrew, which has stores here too. Most of the designers will be the same if she just goes to a bridal salon.

  I was the MOH to a British friend and I bought my own dress. (this was about 7 years ago..maybe things have changed?) With the power of the internet, we chose the dress online together and I ordered it and had it shipped to a bridal salon near me.

  My MOH lives in Paris and hasn't been back to the US since I asked her to be part of our wedding party at the beginning of January. I found the bridesmaid dresses at a local boutique (sent her pictures), and they had a measurement and payment submission form available on their website. My MOH got measured in Paris, sent in her measurements via the website, and had her dress delivered to her family in the US. It does get a little bit complicated, but many boutiques are very accommodating when it comes to special/long-distance circumstances.
