August 2015 Weddings

Am I late?

Hello brides,

Our wedding date is august 8th 2015 :-)  I am wondering when do i need to start doing stuff. We have most everything in our heads what we want. But i mean, when should i be buying stuff? I am going dress shopping next weekend. YES , I know, I AM LATE ON THAT ONE. The woman at the store told me I basically have to choose within the next few weeks to notbe short on time. I am having hard time getting into the 'spirit' of the planning. Maybe it's because I know that there is so much to do that I keep procrastinating.

HELP....

Re: Am I late?

  • I wouldn't say you are very far behind. A lot of people here seem to have just about everything planned out now, but your situation is always yours.

So for me, I have looked at the outside of a venue and made sure they do not have my date reserved. I still have to book the venue of course, but I want to see inside of it before I make decision and that requires planning with their office to go when there is an availability.

I have not dress shopped yet in person, more like i have chosen a few things I think would be nice online and will talk to someone in person about what I like about the dresses. I am trying to loose some weight first before I buy anything so see how the fit will be, so maybe in January I will start that.

I have not asked my bridesmaid or my maid of honor yet. I am still trying to think of something sweet to get them to ask. (I'm not a girly girl so having female friends is hard, and I'm not sure how to approach. what if they think we are not close enough? >.< )

I have asked family and friends if they know anyone for catering, the cake, bar tending, hair / makeup that they would recommend before I start looking at companies.

So the thought is all there, but nothing but the wedding colors have been picked. No worries, don't let them stress you. :-)
  • I have the same date as you, and I have a lot of stuff done, but so much left to do as well. I think it depends on your area and how quickly things book up.  I actually booked my photographer before we even had our venue, because the date was the most important thing for us. Side note, if you are looking for some support, I'm in a FB group for brides to be, almost all of them getting married in 2015 and at least 2 others with our same date! Send me a message if you want to join and I'll get you in.  It's nice to have that immediate sounding board to keep you on track!

  • I don't think you're late. I just got engaged last week and we're having our wedding at the end of August. I knew which venue I was most interested in, so I booked it right away. That, for me at least, got me in the 'spirit' of things. It made it seem a little more real. I have two sisters who just might be more excited than I am. I would say if you're having a hard time getting started, gather some people around you who can help you sort out your ideas and stay focused and enthused.
  • Out of my circle of friends ours has the longest engament (with a date set). We chose a longer one to DIY things and, and plan a traditional wedding. We are horrible at keeping on top of things too, so extra time was wanted. You're not really late. Today weddings can happen in so many ways, with as little prep/planning time as you want.

If you want an over-the-top celebration (reference: bridesmaids movie) maybe you're a tad late, because you are hiring so many people. The more vendors you need, the likelyhood of the particular vendor you want, being booked does go up but that's it.

You could buy a dress from a consignment or off-the-rack (just alter it), instead of ordering one soon if it's too stressful.
  • You're not late. I have a late august wedding and am not dress shopping until mid-November. The 6 stores I called for appointment info said as long as I had something selected by Jan/Feb I was fine (for example, Alfred Angelo says 6 months when I called, which includes 3 months for the dress to arrive, and 3 months for alterations). Bridesmaids dresses take less time (~4 months from what the stores told me), so those can be ordered after the wedding dress.

Honestly, venue should be your biggest concern right now, since those book up pretty far in advance. I was only able to find 1 date in August that both the church and the reception site were both available. Photographers also book up fast, so you should be looking into those too pretty quick. Out of the 5 photographers I spoke to, only 2 were available on my wedding date.

I have the same wedding date as well, and my best answer is: depends on where (location and venue) you're having the wedding. I started doing a lot of research even before he proposed (he bought the ring and proposed 6 months later! x_x).

We're having a wedding in San Francisco, and we actually put a hold on the wedding date at a venue because they were booked 17 months out at the time. Then I found out booking the venue included ONLY the venue, so we're making other arrangements to bring everything in (tables, linens, glassware, utensils, decor). Good thing I started early because apparently 08.08 is a popular date (our top choice caterer was already booked for that date, and this was 14 months out).

However, if you're looking at venues that include most of the necessities (catering, chairs, tables, flowers), you still have a lot of time! Good luck!
