First dress shopping appointment!!!

Hello, and congrats!

I'm super excited for my first dress appointment on November 1st!

The only thing is I would like to lose some weight before I try any dresses on, and the shop I'm going to has a really good special going on that won't last long. I'm looking to lose about 15-20 lbs, I know it sounds crazy but I wanted to know if anyone else has any tips on this? Or have ran into this issue?

Also if you do lose alot of weight after getting a dress (like 30 lbs), are there alterations that can handle that? Or did any of you order your dress a size smaller?

Sorry if this sounds really stupid, I'm a complete noob to all of this!

Re: First dress shopping appointment!!!

  • Yay for dress shopping. I'm going next month AH!!!!! I've lost 15lbs recently and kept it off. I want to lose more. I think they say for every 10lbs you lose, your dress will go down one size. But it's easier to take your dress in than out. Your not stupid!!! That's all I know lol from watching dress shows.

@Gregandheather2013‌ Thank you for responding! Congrats on the weight loss! That's a big accomplishment! And thank you for the advice. I want to be a US size 10 for my wedding date (10/10/15)! I'm about a 14 right now, and I would like to be a 12 by the fitting (only one dress size). I would just hope alterations would be able to trim it down another size! I watch dress shows too, and I can never get a feel for the alterations part lol.
  • @teamc2016 I would definitely call and ask the store and make sure they can take in dresses a full 2 sizes. I read somewhere that they can only take it in 2 sizes without damaging the integrity of the dress, but that might vary based on your dress selection. I plan on doing the same because my goal is similar to yours! I'm down 10lbs now and my first appointment is on Nov 8, by which I would like to be down another 10. Also everything I have ever read says do not buy a dress a size smaller.

If you are looking for weight loss advice, I decided to try the paleo diet and have been on it for 5 weeks at about 90-95% strict, except lots of red wine to help with the stress of big decisions. I lost the 10 lbs in 5 weeks and am aiming for another 1 or 2 this week. I also feel better and my skin is noticeably clearer, which is a plus! Just an idea if you are looking to try something new :)
  • I am not shopping until January for this reason.. I want to at least lose 20  if not 30 lbs.. that still gives me 9 months to get the dress fitted.

  • It depends on the dress style on how many dress sizes it be taken in, but it is usually between 2 and 5 sizes.  As for the weight loss congrats on your progress! I too am in the process of getting to my goal.  Do yourself the biggest favor of your life and go to Walmart and buy the Jillian Michaels DVDs!  No matter what series you go with and what level of fitness you are at it will kick your butt! I love the 30 Day Shred but I've heard the yoga series is amazing as well! It is always what I use when I've decided I need to get back on track, and I will incorporate various workouts from hulu.com so I don't get bored, I am a large advocate of working out at home. Then also obviously good diet is key as well! Best of luck!

  • Like kellystaurt11 said some can only take dress in 2 sizes. I went on the website of the store I'm going to and they said the dresses can be altered either 2 sizes up or 2 sizes down. I did the 24 day advocare challenge n lost the 15 n kept it off and lost 11 inches. I go to a gym and I do Zumba at my gym 3 nights a week. I also eat 5 times a day and small portions. Drink lots of water. Take your weight divide it in half and that's how much water in ounces you need to keep hydrated and extra will help flush you out.
  • @tngirl409 Thanks! Jillian Michaels has kicked my butt numerous times! Lol. I've also downloaded The Nike training app, its amazing! And Free! Thanks so much ladies!!! I will definitely check out those diets! Best of luck on your weight loss journey!
  • Congrats to all you ladies!!

Great points!!!  I've just started my dieting and I'm taking 2 days of hot yoga a week and going 5 days to the gym. 1200 calories a day, cutting out sugars etc. I give myself a cheat day though, I don't go crazy but I allow myself to let loose a little.

I have my dress though, I ordered it in April. It's a long story, but my first salon visit I ended up falling in love with my dress, even though I wasn't looking to buy (I didn't even take money or checkbook or anything with me, I was JUST LOOKING!) It fit me perfectly the day I bought it and would only need minor alterations. I went to the salon Saturday to put more money down on it and try it on AGAIN :) only to find, my bust has grown... the last inch of my dress won't zip!  I freaked, I'm already "top heavy" LOL and I'm 27 so I kind of assumed I would only have to worry about weight loss. Luckily, the seamstress said she can take it out, needless to say I will be pushing my last fitting back to as close to my wedding date as possible to insure I do not have anymore issues like this.

Anyone else have similar fitting problems?!?

Yikes! Im top heavy too, so i definitely understand that.  I tried on dresses for the first time yesterday, and it looks like no matter what I do I'll have to make adjustments for the "girls" regardless of what I pick lol.
  • FI and I recently joined our local Y in hopes of losing some weight in the near future. I was doing incredibly well until we moved recently. We did a lot of eating out, grabbing fast food, and pizza ordering during our super stressful move. (Literally everything that could have gone wrong, went wrong.) I put on just about the 20 pounds I worked so hard to lose :( I put off dress shopping now until after the new year in hopes of getting back to where I once was.
  • I'm def top heavy!! I got my dress last week and I actually have to take in the bust. Who knows when it gets closer to my wedding what I will need there. I hope they don't get bigger!
