Wedding Etiquette Forum

"Oh that's a good idea, thanks!"

FI’s cousin was married earlier this year. His wife is friendly and means well, but thinks she is now a wedding expert, despite a few etiquette no-nos appearing at their wedding (cash bar at RD, cocktail hour, and during full reception, and posting pics on FB a few days after the wedding of the new “toys” they bought with their wedding money—new car and TV, but not sending TY notes out until 6 months later…), and other things that weren't etiquette related but kind of made me side- eye: burlap everything, mason jar centerpieces, the worst DJ ever…

Anyway, not only has she tried to sell me her burlap table runners, but she is now giving me suggestions, varying from how to save money, how to lose weight, and ideas for our save-the-dates and invitations.

I'm learning many things during this wedding planning process, especially with the help of you lovely knotties, but one thing I’m definitely taking home with me is to never make suggestions to a bride-to-be about her wedding unless you are genuinely asked for your advice.

  • I've never understood how people can go around offering unsolicited advice on anything.

Losing weight for your wedding? Oh hell no.  Too far over the line.

  • Ugh. Someone tried to sell me their burlap bows. I bit my tongue so hard and said "thanks but I don't think burlap will quite fit with our theme..."

  • I guess it is just human nature (or something) to offer tea lights, centerpieces, runners etc to someone who is getting married. I had a few of these offers myself (though none were offers to sell me anything).

I chose a venue that took care of all that stuff for me because I am DIY-lazy.

Apparently people assume all brides are also interested in losing weight! Ugh.

Anyway, "That's a great idea, thanks!" is the perfect (and only) response.
