NWR: Business "Festive?"

I'm attending a business event tonight-- it's basically an awards ceremony and fundraising dinner for a local non-profit.  The dress code, apparently, is "Festive."  On a Wednesday night in October.  For a business event.  I can't shake my head at this enough.  Who thinks "Festive attire" is a good idea or helpful to anyone?

Maybe I'll get really crazy and take off my suit jacket.

    Hahaha! I haaate ambiguous dress codes like that, it stresses me out so much. I also have a heapload of social anxiety so the thought of being over or underdressed at a work event would drive me crazy. Also, when I think of "festive" attire I think of Christmas lights or wrapping bows...maybe try that ;)

    What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    Do you have a slightly sparkly blouse or something that you can wear under your suit jacket? Might liven it up a bit? Idk, festive = sparkly and loud to me.

    I went with a purple sheath dress and black jacket instead of the black pantsuit I'd been planning on. I may throw on some more eye makeup and a statement necklace before I go. Yeah, festive means sparkly to me too, but I associate that mostly with Christmas. The whole thing is just odd.

    I just went to our annual global meeting and got an email beforehand saying that the dress code was "Business Smart." Hm... ok.

    My boss gets sent this guide for a yearly conference she attends (CLICKY) and we usually can't stop laughing at the thing. "Resort Business", "Resort Dressy Casual"? Really?! Is that necessary?

    I hate whenever work plans for something with a different dress code than the office has. I'm not gonna drive my ass home to change, and I'm not working all day in a party dress. Fuckers. If you want me to change, give me half a day off. I'll wait here and hold my breath for that.

    Do you remember the episode of Desperate Housewives where Lynette went out to a bar after work and took off her blazer with basically a lingerie camisole underneath? Maybe that's what they're looking for.

    I hear "festive" and I would think wear sparkly red and green, i.e. Christmas. But why would they use festive a couple days before Halloween?  What?

    We chose appropriately though.  At the last minute somebody else dropped out and I brought Fi instead.  He wore a suit, I wore a dress with a black jacket.  Most women were either dressed like me or in cocktail attire; most men were in suits.

    The whole thing was really fun.  Open bar, stations of food and passed appetizers.  Not a sit-down dinner but enough food to keep you if you wanted (pasta, two salads, chicken, meatballs, soup, tomato tarts...) and the speakers were AWESOME.  It was a reproductive rights/ womens rights events so I was super into all of the speakers.  Dr. Willie Parker was there and he got a standing ovation.

    Anyway.  It was a great time and well hosted.  But the dress code was lame.
    Why not just say cocktail attire, then? Lol oh well. I'm glad it was fun!
