I'm trying to just go with the flow with all the ridiculous stuff that DD's school does, because I know it would be even worse at another school.  And, what am I going to do about it anyway?  We can't afford private school and I'm not quitting my job to home school.
So, 2 months ago, DD's school went into "lockdown" mode because there was a bomb threat at the high school 2 miles away.  It irritated me, because logically I'm thinking that one has nothing to do with the other.  Obviously they think it's better to be safe than sorry... fine, whatever.  I will accept that.
They do "stranger in the building" drills (that's what the kindergartners are told it is) along with the fire and tornado drills that they do regularly.  I know I need to accept that's part of life now.  Okay.
Then yesterday, the school once again went into lockdown mode because there was a "police situation" in a different city over 30 miles away.  Police tried to arrest someone on a parole violation and the guy got away - - they ended up chasing him 4 blocks and catching him.  WTF does that have to do with DD's school whatsoever?  ALSO, what about the daily "police situations" in the inner city.  (We are in a suburb on the outskirts of the Columbus metro area, and the inner city is a lot less than 30 miles away).
It just makes ZERO sense to me.  Zero.  And I don't want to be "that mom" who pitches a fit about it.  I'm 50/50 on whether I'm being ridiculous to be so annoyed at this.  
Opinions on this situation?  
Opinions on "lockdowns" in general?  ALICE and active shooter drills?

    My opinions on them are rather revolutionary and leftist, so I won't share them b/c it doesn't tend to engage good discussion.   However, I had posted this link on my page the other day and thought about it when reading yours:

    Lockdown drills are the suck. So are fire and tornado drills, but the state mandates that we have to have them.

    It's kinda like home insurance. You really don't need it, until you need it, and it doesn't always cover everything when the s*** hits the fan.

    It is never fun trying to keep 25 kids quiet for an extended period of time, for sure.

    I don't know, it sounds excessive to me, too.  I can definitely see why you're annoyed.

    If DD's school does these, I haven't heard about it.  Anyway, they're too busy getting t-shirts for tomorrow's fun run, separate t-shirts for field trips and other school-related events (except the fun run, apparently), and dying [sic] a third batch of shirts for some nebulous reason that has something to do with Thanksgiving.  I'm starting to think this is some kind of pre-FIT magnet program, and no one told me.

    I know what you are talking about.  My nieces are in school in that city and didn't go on lockdown so I say they OVERREACTED.  I would have a discussion with the school to see what happened and why they responded that way. 

    My ears did perk up at that report because my sister lives off of that street.  Actually in the neighborhood where that house exploded recently.

    Total overreaction on the school's part.  They don't tell the kids, right?  They just send a blast to the parents. 

    The kiddo is funny about active shooter drills. He's 13, so any thought of that type of 'action' spins him into fantasyland about taking the bad guys down.  I mean, he acts out his 'plan' for us.  It's all very romantical to him.  But he'd probably shit his pants a little in reality ( and dear God I hope I never have to find out.)

    This was the article I was thinking of too.

    Rehearsing for your death...kinda sums it up. Institutionalized victimization. Or an extension of that whole Dirty Harry fantasia that is de rigeur these days.

    Thanks Varuna.  Although it just added to my frustration and is making my blood boil faster.  So, no thanks?  ;)

    I do feel for the teachers like you wouldn't believe.  What a bunch of BS that they even have to think about this at all.  There are 29 kids in DD's class, with 2 teachers.  Kindergartners are the most rebellious little shits, testing their limits 24/7.  I can't imagine trying to keep them quiet and in one place on a daily basis, let alone in lockdown mode.  If I make any complaint at all, it will be to the principal, not the teachers.
