Me, right now

Re: Me, right now

  • To add to that, I hate that the workers are being bamboozled into being thankful for the higher pay and extra hours.
  • My mom quit working for a retailer last year that decided to open on Thanksgiving.  She had no intention of working and could not ask her people do that either.

    It's complete bullshit.

Also, there's no real 'proof' that opening on Thanksgiving really does anything for those stores bottom lines in the long run.

MIL tried to convince me and SIL's to go shopping last Thanksgiving.  She was pouting that we couldn't do Black Friday because we went to Asheville/The Biltmore instead.  I drank too much to be appropriate in public so MIL and SIL's got in their PJ's early.  :D
  • Bil skipped out on thanksgiving last year to go to walmart for a tv. He wants to host this year. I want to know what happens if he needs to go to walmart.
  • Places have been open on Thanksgiving since there's been Thanksgiving, practically. I worked every T-Day when I had shit jobs. I don't know why this is so surprising to people - and frankly, I was happy not to have to go to my mother's until dinner was on the table, and that with a pocket full of tips.

I don't really have a dog in this fight. Open or don't open on Thanksgiving, whatever, but why are people up in arms about "the workers" in just the last couple of years? And why aren't they pointing out the restaurants that do T-Day, or the convenience stores, or the movie theatres? I think it's weird that some retail workers are considered to be terribly inconvenienced for working holidays, and some aren't.

  • I'm kind of with you Bmom.  How many people will stop for non-essentials or go out?  One of the big things I don't like though is the retail workers are being forced to work shifts they wouldn't normally be open.  It really messes with a body and creates unsafe conditions for the workers and people they encounter on the road.
  • I think the only places that should be open are the emergency service centers and gas stations, basically necessary services.  I get why grocery stores are open and would hope they keep a limited schedule (most of them I've seen do).  The few times I've used any of those services on Thanksgiving, I've made sure to thank them above and beyond my usual polite self.

There's no reason for Best Buy, Macy's or any thing else to be open b/c that's about consumerism over people.  And that's bullshit.  People are up in arms over it finally b/c it's about consumerism over people and they don't like it.
  • I guess I don't care if they are open or not, but I do dislike how the stores market it. The frenzy of it all the culminates in accidents, shootings, fights, etc. is just generated by the stores. Do they really think that pricing a $2000 TV for $300 isn't going to result in stampeding and overall bad behavior? I think we expect people to be a little better behaved, but at what point in human history has that been the case.
