Wedding Tomorrow - Vow Help Needed Stat!

I know I sound like a crazy person but my wedding is tomorrow night and I have NO vows and NO readings prepared.

My fiance (5 years living together) and I have the means to have a huge blow out wedding, but instead about four weeks ago we decided to go ahead and go for it tomorrow (everyone in my immediate family was married on 11/11, he has no family so it is important to him to honor my family who has become the first family he's ever known). Just myself, him, our internet ordained friend, and two other close friends. We are having it at my art studio, totally low key because that's how we roll - except for my badass hand crafted ring.

But that also means we had no time to research how the eff a wedding works. We picked up the license today and suddenly realized we are supposed to have something prepared for our internet minister to read, and probably something for each of us to say.

I've been scouring the internet for things to say that won't make us queasy. We are not romantics at all. Everything I find is so sappy - neither he nor I would ever ever say things like that. Our wedding song is The Gambler. Because it is hilarious.

Do any of you well prepared brides have any idea where I can go to find passages that are more funny and irreverent than sappy? Have any of you used or heard any readings like this, and know where to guide me?

And again, I know I sound like a crazy person, but getting married barefoot in my art studio while listening to The Gambler is just perfect for who we are.

Thank you in advance!

  • If you want more time to prepare, move the wedding to 11/11/15.

If not, I would just stop googling and think about your FI. What do you love about him? Why are you choosing to spend your life with him? Why are you confident you can make it through thick and thin? Why do you want to be his life partner? Why do you want him to be yours? What do you promise to do for him? Love him? Compromise with him? Work with him? Support him? Etc....

Then have him go off in his own corner and do the same thing. Decide on a time limit - like a minute or two so one of you doesn't go on forever and the other is 2 sentences.

Your minister should have some general stuff prepared and be able to wing it if you're ok with that. If you want someone to do reading, think poetry you like, or passages from books. It doesn't have to be a bible reading. One of our readings was a Shakespeare sonnet.

  • Weddings are a serious event.  Save "funny" for some other time.

"For richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sickness and in health" covers it.

  • I may be too late (happy wedding day, BTW!), but why don't you just go with spontaneity? Have your officiant say whatever he/she feels in the moment, and same with you & FI. The ceremony planner I read to prepare our own vows had a small description of a ceremony that was completely unscripted and it sounds like you're the perfect couple for something like that. Let it come from the heart.

    Best of luck!

  • This may be too late, but just speak from your heart & tell each other what you love about each other & what you vow for your lives going forward. Like  "I promise to be there for you in good time and bad, I promise to be the shoulder for you to lean on, I promise to continue to show my love for you every day, and I promise to pick up my socks"  LOL...ok the last part is in humor, but you get the idea.

  • Ditto on just speaking from your heart. I sat down with a pen and a piece of paper, and just wrote what I wanted him to know, and what I was promising to him. I included some nice personalized things, like promising to take on new projects together (very important to him). I also included this quote from a book:

Your smile is my rainbow, your laughter is my home, your touch is my heaven
