Is it improper?

Due to the size of our pocket invitation we have had to lose the inner envelope on our invites. This leaves the problem of the "and guest". Any couple that is in a relationship will have both formal names on the outside envelope, but we do have some truly single friends that are still being offered a plus 1. Is it ok to put "and guest on the outside envelope it seems wrong.

Yes that is fine. The only other way is to include a note inside the invite package stating that they are welcomed to bring a guest, but sometimes all those little cards can get over looked so putting it on the envelope is your best bet.

Yes.

"Mr. John Smith and Guest" on the inner envelope, while you have "Mr. John Smith" on the outer envelope is fine. That's how you'd want to do it because it outlines specifically who is invited (and Mr. Smith can bring whoever he wants).

I would do it with a note on the inside if I didnt like the way it looked on the outer envelope.

The problem is I will not have an inner envelope due to the size of the pocket invitation.
