    JUST FINISHED!!

OMG.  I'm now even more on the fence than ever.

I listen to parts of the story, where other people are talking and think that maybe he did it.  And then he talks and then I think there's no way he could have done it.  And then Sarah talks about how maybe he's a 'psychopath' and then I get confused all over again.

I think his lawyer did a terrible job.  I think she was sick and needed money for treatments or drugs (legal or illegal) and that's why she was shaking clients down for cash.   I think, also, her illnesses (since they were getting serious) clouded her thoughts and judgement.  I think she started out with good intent, but it went to shit fast.  I would have loved if they could have investigated her finances to see what was going on.

Either way, he's probably not getting out of prison without a miracle.  And this is a huge letdown for me for some reason.  I guess I'm just rooting for him because I really feel like he was screwed by the system and his lawyer.

Also, I agree that there was some prejudice.  I don't think it went as far as his mom thinks it did.  But it was definitely there, spoken or unspoken.
  • I agree with everything you said MrsConn. I'm so glad they finally addressed the lawyer issue more.

And the detail about Jay having a pro bono lawyer that wasn't a public defender hired by the detectives? WHAT THE WHAT.

I do feel sad for Adnan. You can tell he's resigned himself to a life in prison.
  • OMG! Yes, the pro bono lawyer thing is whack.  IDK how that couldn't completely discredit Jay and the cops.
  • I feel like, intentional or not, Gutierrez screwed Adnan irrevocably.
  • Completely, Dixie. It's really, really too bad that she's dead.
  • Also, I would have drilled my ear drums out if I had to listen to her for hours on end.
  • OMG! Yes, the pro bono lawyer thing is whack.  IDK how that couldn't completely discredit Jay and the cops.
Right?  And the judge is like "well, Jay doesn't know it's unusual, so it's cool."  WHAT???

The psychopath thing made me wonder if next week would bring in psychologists or something, but the next episode is called "Rumors," so now I'm guessing not.  I keep thinking of Deirdre from the Innocence Project, regarding the charming sociopath:  "You're not that lucky."  Maybe not.  But someone has to get the charming sociopath, right?

I thought Cristina Gutierrez sounded like a pretty good lawyer, until her health started falling apart and basically took her career with it.  Pretty crappy at the end, with the sketchy cash payments and everything.  Sad all the way around.

I'm with Sarah, I didn't buy it when Adnan's mom said the only reason the police arrested him was because he was Muslim.  (Sort of glosses over the fact that Jay straight-up said Adnan did it.)  But the thing about the consultant's report?  "In Pakistan, this wouldn't have been a crime, it would have been defending his honor."  Please.  One high school teacher says Adnan has an uncle in Pakistan who can make people disappear (sounds like high school boy bravado/posturing to me), another says she assumes his parents are evil???

And the thing about the jury pool, and how many have either been victims of a crime, convicted of a crime, or had a family member conivcted of a crime.  Damn.

Favorite moment, from Sarah:  "I wish I could complain to a judge every time someone called me an asshole."
  • OMG, her voice is the most grating thing ever.  I wonder if the jury hated her based on that alone.
  • I'm really overusing OMG in this post.  Ha.
  • i REALLY want to know if The Innocence Project has gotten anything to help Adnan. Or not. I just need loose ends tied up, dammit!
  • I really can't imagine how Hae's family is dealing with this. Talk about reliving a nightmare they never woke up from in the first place.
  • I will say that I think they have done a great job at reporting the story from Adnan's side, but keeping Hae (and her memory) in a positive to neutral light.

Dixie, I was wondering about this too. When I started listening I dug around, and apparently the family is very unhappy about the podcast. They are upset and they firmly believe that Adnan is guilty. I guess her brother (possibly, I didn't see it confirmed) went on Reddit and said that this is life ruining for them and is really hurting the mom.
  • I remember seeing that about the brother but it wasn't confirmed if it was really him. I do feel so badly for them.
