NWR - Semi Formal X-Mas Party and FI Has No Pants

Literally. FI bought a new suit last week but we don't have time to get it tailored before my semi-formal work Xmas party on Saturday. Apparently whoever is in charge of this thing left me off the email blasts so while everyone else has been planning this for months, I just found out today.

Luckily the suit vest fits great and the blazer fits okay, but the pants are just ... atrociously baggy. Can we swap out pants if we can find something in the closet to match closely enough? Or will the suit likely be impossible to match without suit pants?

  • What color suit? If it's black, another pair of black pants should look fine.  They may not match perfectly, but noone's going to be inspecting him closely.

Does he have to wear a suit? Could he wear nice dress pants, shirt and tie instead?

  • Your FI would be perfectly dressed if he wore a pair of slacks, a button down shirt and a tie.

  • Google says semi-formal means suit. It is black, so I'm hoping we can swing by. And I know he'd like to wear his shiny new vest if he can...

  • For semi-formal, I would say that a shirt, tie and pants are just fine.
  • I'd match it with another pair of pants the best you can.

FWIW, half of the GMs at our wedding were wearing pants that did not perfectly match the vests. No one noticed.

  • He should wear a "suit" but nobody will notice the separates not matching. This is your work. Don't rock the boat.

How in the world would she be rocking the boat if her FI doesn't wear a suit?  If he wore slacks, shirt and tie that would be perfectly acceptable dress for semi-formal.  It isn't like we are suggesting he wear jeans and a tux t-shirt.

  • Does he own a sport coat?  DH will throw that on to make pretty much anything just a bit more dressed up.  (If he doesn't own one, highly recommend buying one at some point!)
  • I'd be sneaky and find out how other dudes are dressing. Like, if they're wearing suits or rocking just ties or sweaters. (Dudes in nice sweaters and cardigans are so dapper!)

But your title made me think of this

  • OP, your title made me think that your FI was going in his tighty-whities!  LOL!

    Reality says semi-formal means nothing.

Another vote for slacks, dress shirt, and tie. Sports coat if he's got one.

  • DH & I have a "semi formal" Christmas dinner dance at our community next weekend. DH will wear dress pants, shirt and tie. I can tell you the tie will probably come off after dinner when the dancing starts.
  • Throwing in my vote for dress pants, shirt, tie!

I would think that a dress shirt, pants, jacket, and tie that go well together, even if the pants and jacket are not part of a suit, should work fine.
  • Every time I hear the words semi formal and someone trying to put a definition to it I think of a high school dance dress code!

Another vote for shirt/tie/slacks or sport coat/shirt/slacks(tie), or sweater/tie/shirt/slacks
  • Haha, I agree with AbbyJ - I read 'Semi Formal' and thought 'Oh goodie, prom.'

Anyway, thank you all. We found a pair of slacks close enough in color to the new vest and jacket that he looked fabulous! THANK YOU! :)

  • For semi formal, go get him some pants that fit, nice button down shirt, tie & the vest & you are ready to party!!!
