Signature drink tips

I am hoping to have a signature drink at our reception. We are not having a bar/bar tender. Has anyone done a signature drink on their own? Do you have any tips or tricks, or any advice?

Thanks!

Re: Signature drink tips

  • If you don't have a bar tender, they you are going to need one of those self serve canisters with a spigot (about $20.00 at Walmart).  At that point, a champaign punch is easiest because it pretty much stays mixed if you put the sorbet in first, then add lemonade, sprite, followed by the sparkling wine.  Because you are mixing, you can get away with a much less expensive bubbly.  At a recent baby shower, I made the non-alcholoic punch in the container and left bottles of pink barefoot bubbly in ice buckets on the side, for people to spike or not, too many pregnant ladies in attendance.  It turned out to be a huge hit both ways.
  • Who is going to refill the empty sig drink container?

But like PP said a punch would be your best bet.  You could easily mix up a huge batch of punch before hand and then have someone available to refill the container you are using to serve the sig drink.

  • Anything pre-mixed. How about a sangria?
  • I wouldn't do that.  I dont' want to be forced to only have one kind of a drink.  Most people have very different tastes in drinks so it would be hard to have something that most people would be happy with.

  • We've thought about having a white and red wine, a lager or porter type beer and a lighter beer, and then we may have a brides signature drink and a grooms signature drink. We've thought about pre pouring in mason jars, but thats only if we're going to do a sangria or something of the sort.

I have seen while looking at venues that some do not allow "Free Pours"
so, check with your venue first.

  • Yes! Check with your venue and event insurance policy. Bartenders may be required for your alcohol. And, do you have adequate staff? Not only do bartenders pour drinks, they help watch for over served guests, cleanup the set up at the end of the night, they pick up cups when it's slow so they're not sitting out everywhere, restock cups and ice/etc. You may want to reconsider.

We had this sangria and beer all night long. The white wedding cosmo and strawberry vodka lemonade was only during cocktail hour. If guest wanted anything else it was on their tab.
  • A ton of drinks can be made in large batches and put in containers to be self-served.  What do you like to drink?
