NWR: Housewarming Invites

My sister has an etsy store where she designs and personalizes invitations. She just sold a housewarming invitation where the couple requested she add "gifts aren't required, but we are registered at ____." She obliged, but couldn't wait to snark on it! Your friends and family aren't the only ones judging you behind your back. Your venders could be too! (Even if they agree to your outrageous, etiquette-breaching requests!)

  • Ew indeed. As if gifts are ever "required" anywhere? Greeeeedy.

  • Gross!
I know guests to housewarmings normally want to bring something to honor the occasion anyway (wine, a potted plant), but it is most certainly not a registry occasion.

  • I just had the greatest idea. Ever. Of my whole life. Can't we all just have life registries? We could just keep a running registry, adding and removing things as things take our fancy or fall out of fashion. Any possible gift giving occasion, people could just go to your life registry & pick out whatever the heck it is you wished for, with no thought or personalization. Gone are the days when you might get a heartfelt, handmade item that is gorgeous and perfect for you but you didn't want! No more will you have to worry that you might receive 10 potted plants and zero fancy toasters for your housewarming! Take all of the guesswork out of getting gifts, and stock your Life Registry today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you were being sarcastic, but I basically have a "life registry".  It's called an amazon wishlist.  And I add things to it as it strikes my fancy, buy things off it as I need them or have money for them, and will occasionally get things off it for Christmas.  But I also got "perfect for me, didn't realize I wanted it, handmade" cloth napkins from a cousin the week before Thanksgiving as a sort of housewarming gift.  Just because I HAVE a "life registry" doesn't mean EVERY gift I will ever receive in my life has to have been on it.
